You'll get a better job done if you remove everything before you go.The guy in crystal lake is Hellyer's sand and soda blasting 815 458 4509. He does paint and powder coating. The one who did mine is BK sandblasting 847 373 1032. He does not paint tho.

Great idea Brian. Alan happens to have a spare trailer, which used to be Tim's, which used to be mine, so I'll probably borrow that one. Talk about full circle. |

Well, if Quinner has his boat on the lift, just put your boat on his trailer while yours is in the shop.
I would take the wires off the trailer as well. Also, I would unbolt the fenders and do them separately. In my experience the worst rust is where the fenders bolt to the trailer. BKH |

Yes, I went with a 2 part epoxy primer and urethane top coat, seems to be holding up pretty good so far. |

Pete, no plans there. The lights actually pop right out, held in place only with a rubber gasket. And, they unplug very easily from the rest of the wiring. I could drive it there, and pop them out in minutes. Tuck the wires back into the frame and be good to go? That's what I'm thinking anyway. I could take out the side markers well in advance. I also have to figure out what to do with the boat itself. Not a huge fan of the "block it up in the garage" idea.

Joel,
When out shopping for a blaster/painter, I highly recommend going with wet paint over powder coat. (Alan, didn't you end up with wet?) Powder has come a long way but it still doesn't have the adhesion qualities of wet. Plus, they can spray a good rust inhibiting primer on it then a high gloss urethane. With powder, any pin hole will allow moisture to get between it and the steel and that's it for the steel! Astro: 630 595 0240 1141 E. Joel,
I used Electrostatic Concepts/Creative Iron when I did mine. They are in Naperville so a little further away for you but they can do the blasting, any repair work you need and paint or powder coat it. The blasting on mine was $300, paint was more than yours will be because they did the fiberglass piece on mine as well as the frame. They can use any paint you want, epoxy or urethane, etc. If you call talk to Rick, he'll remember mine  630-904-5040

Joel,
I've used Astro Blast in Bensonville/Franklin Park several times. They will paint it for you too with any paint system. When I did my Tee Nee, I took it completly apart, inventoried (list) the pieces for them and they sand blasted for $100. I didn't have them do any painting because I had lots of reworking and welding to do. They do lots of trailers. |

Joel,when I get home tonight I'll get you what little info I have. Last year at this time there were 3 places in Crystal Lake,but when I actually did it there was 2.You need to look under sandblasting in the phone book. Since gravel mining is done here, these guy's blast trucks and equiptment. I was quoted 300.00 at 2 places,one doing the priming the other one just blasting. I imagine my trailer a #2 is smaller also.In the end the 3rd guy I talked to did the blasting for 200. Painting is a whole nother matter and will run the cost up,depending what paint and prep work that has to be done.

I've started several threads here on various trailer refurbishment steps but I still haven't done anything to her. One of the things that's been holding me back besides time and motivation is the idea that if I can find a place to sandblast and repaint it, then I may as well put everything else on hold until that gets done. But, I have no idea where to start with this. I don't even know where I'd look in the yellow pages or what to expect to pay. So:
1. What kind of shop even does this, and is not going to sound like I'm crazy for calling ("What? A boat trailer? What in carnation!?! Did you hear this Bobby? This guy wants us to paint him a boat trailer! Son of a gun! Boy Howdy!") 2. What should I expect to pay? Assume that I'd strip the bunks, carpeted steps, and wiring out before sending it over, and I'd find a temporary home for the boat. I'd just want it blasted, and repainted gloss black. Nothing fancy. My trailer is starting to really look like a rusty son-of-a-B. |
