Eric, I believe you are correct. Sunliner built a three-engine model for law enforcement as well.
I am looking for a mechanic to work on my Irvette. Does anyone know one who is capable around Columbia, SC?? |

Irvette, I believe, was named after the gentleman who designed them...very rugged hull design, this particular one used an obsolete 1500 series Borg Warner into a PCM outdrive, the Borg Warner is the weak link on this one..
all in all it was a nice boat |

TRBenj,
Sorry for the confusion, I'm mixing terms. The boat I own has a PCM Ford 302 with model 4140 stern drive. The service manuals also had the velvet drive 71C, 72C as well, but you're right, I don't have the v-drive boat. |

Hey Swatkinz,
Naw, that's not mine, but I know where the sandwich shop is. Mine is for sale. I wanted a mechanic to have a look at it first though since I havent run it for many years (winterized and moved to other side of Cola) |

SCBoater, are you talking about v-drives or I/O's? I have never heard of an I/O with a PCM or BW (velvet drive) transmission.

Irvette made both. They made the Ford 302 Chevy 302/351 block with stern drive PCM. They also made an Inboard center console walk-around 18-20 ft sportfish. I think they were called Irvette because the sales office was near Irmo SC, right on Lake Murray.

Eric, are you looking for some PCM engine or transmission technical information? I have a contact at PCM that I'll guarantee can tell you about the setup on that boat. I don't want to post his name here, but if it's information you seek, let me know.

I re-read the thread from the beginning. Eric you make reference to an outdrive and SCBoater references an I/O. The only Irvette I've seen was definitely a direct drive straight inboard. No outdrive. Are you guys referring to inboards or sterndrives?

SC Boater, I'm in Lexington. I saw an Irvette parked on St. Andrews RD near Mathias Sandwich Shop with a For Sale sign on it a couple of years ago. Looked like it would be a cool boat. Is this your boat

I bought an Irvette. They were sold around Lake Murray, SC, near Columbia. The company was headquartered out of Newberry SC. The Irvette is a sport-fish version of the Sunliner boats they built. Excellent double hull, all fiberglass/no carpet or junk. I still have it parked outside but don't know if it runs now. 302 Ford engine, PCM Stern Drive. 19 ft deep vee. Kids loved it for wakeboarding because I could tail-drag it and make a big wake.
Two dry boxes on stern, wet box in bow floor. Rod holders, stern ladder, Bimini top, VDO instruments, ran very nice (premium gas). |

In the early 80's, the company i worked for tried coming up with a tranny per spec, probably for PCM, it was a Paragon, we had all kinds of problems and money dumped into it.
I think Borg Warner was also involved, then in 1989 ZF came up with the pcm40 and pcm40a. I am pretty sure the ZF got hold of one of these 1500 series and reverse engineered it and got the order to start production, Damn, the Borg warner looks exactly like the PCM, I do have a feeling it came down to pricing, im curious and will update when i no more info |

Eric, I tried to check the velvet drive website and it's not working anymore... is this still a Borgwarner product?
what's going on here? Wich is a copy of the other? I'd be very much interested in knowing the whole history. |

anyone ever hear of an Irvette boat? got one in and it was made in the Fla. area, its claimed to be a fish/ski boat, but it does have a PCM outdrive and a 1500 series Borg Warner (the one the PCM 40A plans were reverse engineered and stolen from. seems to be well built
