We never could get the detent ball to fully fall into place in reverse. But it works fine on the water. Thanks for all you help.

They do wear out but they feel sloppy, the throw should not change. If it shifted before you took it apart then your just missing something.

Do you have a small bracket attached to the shift lever on the trans or are you attaching directly to the shift lever. Is it possible the rebuilder left the bracket off?

We tried both locations and didn't seem any better. Can the morse control be that worn out?

Take a look at the Morse manual in the referance secion, the shift lever on the control has 2 holes, I beleive you have the cable in the wrong hole. That would change the throw.

Eric,
When I first got the rebuilt tranny back and put the new shift cable in, on land it would shift into forward/reverse. You could see the drive shaft switch directions. When we launched the boat for lake test it had reverse but it wasn't very strong. Thats when we started to adjust and found we can't get the detent ball to fall in revers. If I reach behind the control and move the lever from behind there is about the same amount of play that we are short getting it to fully engage in reverse. I tried adjusting today some more. I have it now where the detent ball fully engages in forward and neutral, and starts to fall in reverse. Hopefully that will work. I will know tomorrow after test drive.

Ive ran into this problem, at times you cant find the detent on both ranges. if you absoluetly cant get it to detent in both ranges, make sure it detents in the forward position moreso than reverse. in reverse your not putting full power to the pack and on the test stand the pressure wont drop until the ball is almost completely past the detent. im sitting here wondering if thats good advice.
this advice is for when your new parts arrive to fix the problem and if you take the boat out before the repair

One can't deviate too far from neutral else the NSS will object.
Where there not multiple holes on the Morse? If the cable was replaced, if you used a hole too close to the fulcrum, there may not be enough throw now.

You will get a few responses on this that have had more experience than I.
I haad my motor out to do the guts of the boat. I re-routed my cables through the front. My maiden voyage yielded no reverse. I tried several adjustments, and the one that worked was adjusting the pivot one turn out, and I had reverse. They are off by about 1/8" of an inch still. I think that it needs about 1/4 of a turn to be perfect. When I move it to forward gear it needs to go just a hair past the detent I feel you are talking about, and reverse engages just a hair before the detent. I feel I just need to bend the cable mount bracket on the trans about you know what kind of hair towards the engine and it will be perfect.
Really fine adjustments go a long way.   When I first took it out it was almost like the entire shifter had rotated 30-40* counterclockwise. one turn made that much of a difference.

We have a 1986 Nautique and we just had the transmision rebiult and put a new shift cable in the boat while the transmission was out being rebuilt. We put the transmision in Neutral and hook up the shift cable. When we shift to forward, the detent ball on the tranny goes into place. When we go to reverse, it doesn't quite go into place. If we adjust the cable so we can get it in reverse, then it won't go into forward. What seems to be is play in the control. You can move the cable about a 1/4" back and forth. Is that normal?
