Mike,

Thanks, I will heat the ring to try to pull out the finger. Hopefully, I will not burn the boat to the ground.

Thanks,

Donald, We used propane. Map gas burns a little hotter,no? That should be ok too. We had to heat the pylon with acetelyne to get the ring out after removing the finger from it.

Thanks Everyone.

79, Yes we can work something out if I do a complete change out.

I looked at it yesterday and it is a set screw. I removed the screw and tried to pull out the broken finger with a rag and some vice grips, but it would not move at all. When you look in the set screw hole, you can see the finger appears to have a little taper on the end. This leaves me to believe that it will come out.

Mike,

What do you recommend that I heat it with? What kind of Gas do you use? I have a Tourch with Propane and MAP Gas for working on Copper Pipes. Is this what I should use?

Thanks for the help.

Donald,
I am also in search of a ring finger for my 79 SN Previous Owner had removed the finger (It has a threaded hole where set screw would have held it in) but he cut the ring off at the base so all I have is a nub sticking up. I removed the roll pins and got the insert out of the pylon (pita). If your deal works out with for a complete ring & finger. I might be interested in your old ring as I might be able to have a finger piece fabricated somewhere. Just a thought. My E-mail is in profile.
Thanks, Monty

I took a finger off last weekend and it was a set screw. 81 Ski Nautique. We put an extended pylon on my buds boat and he had the sawzall ready to go. I had to B!tch slap him and we removed it the proper way. Not much fun to get off(the ring that is) . The finger slid right out after loosening the screw. Whatever you do,make sure you have a perfect size allen key,not some rounded off metric size from the pawn shop. And heat it first.

Donald,
Are you sure it's a set screw and not a roll pin (spring pin). I've seen some with the roll pins in blind holes. Makes it very hard to remove!! Due to the hardness of the pin, they need to be burnt out with a EDM (electro discharge machining). Still not impossible but some machine shops may not be equipped. It's more of a tool and die piece of equipment.

Check it to see if it is a set screw. I'm curious!!

Hello,

The finger on the ring on my 1980 SN Pilon is broken off to a one inch lenght. It looks like the PO cut it off or it has broke off. I do not know if this was done to run a boom or something.

Yesterday, I was looking at my Ring and I noticed there is a set screw on the ring under the broken finger. I know that some of the older Rings and Fingers seem to be one piece, but mine appears to be a two piece Ring and Finger deal. I was on the water so I did not have my tools, but I was wondering the following:

HAS ANYONE EVERY REMOVED THE FINGER FROM THE RING?

I was thinking about pulling out this broken finger from the ring and having a machine shop machine me a new one. I could push the new one back into the hole and torque the set screw again. My goal is to have a complete finger on my ring.

I am curious if this is how it comes apart, or if it does at all?

Thanks,

Donald
