Remember that there is a big difference between REpainting the original painted stripes on a 82-84 Ski Nautique and painting over the original gelcoated stripe on the 85+ versions because youre too lazy to buff it out properly.

I have it down at Lake Buckhorn in Millersburg Oh. It stays on the trailer with a cover. It gets used about 12 hrs year. I bought it 7 yrs ago.

I can rib ya cause im a Cleveland boy myself, what part? was it sitting in outside storage on the West side off of 90?

This happened because:
a) you didnt remove all the oxidation last year
b) you didnt properly remove all the scratches left from sanding when you buffed it out
c) you didnt adequately protect the gelcoat with wax after polishing it
d) a combination of a,b,c

Everyone is ribbing you because painting over gel is a band aid at best- especially with a rattle can!

Thanks to everyone for the tips and the ragging. I am going to use the spray rustoleum and will let you know how it comes out.   

Arktran - You might want to consider renting a small air compressor & spray gun. The cost savings of not having to buy so many aerasol can would probably cover the rental charge. Also, it would be much less tiring on your arm & finger, plus the finish will be much more consistent. A boat is a large surface area, even if just the boot stripe, to get to 'flow out' if you are just spitting paint.

PS, with either method, please use a respirator!

I know others were speaking tongue in cheek. But, it's a legitimate way to get paint to flow better. Warm it up a bit. If the guy wants to spray his boat we can help him to do it the way many of us would do it. If he wants to paint it, I'm still good for helping him with that as well.

Anyway, If i remember correctly with one of my conversations with a Meloon a few years back at a Cedar Point Reunion, they used Rustoleum at the factory for the side graphics. (I know this was for the 70's era graphics, but the point stands)

Not trying to step on any toes or be a douche, just trying to help the guy out with whatever path he chooses.

We go to a lake in Millersburg called Lake Buckhorn great for wakeing.

I have wet sanded last year but it faded again. I have used spray paint on cars and turned out very good. I just do not know if the wear on the paint from the water would be a problem. But if it lasts longer than a year thats good.

he has been a little cranky lately, I used to get beat up alot on this site for using the term "dummy charge" i think some may be understanding the term more clearly

Ace Hardware has got a special deal going on case quanties of Krylon. You'll probably need two cases (24 cans). Take a look at the Krylon for plastic. Maybe they have it in the color you want. With it, don't even worry about sanding the gel coat down.

Where in the Cleveland area do you ski? I was from up there (Avon) before relocating to Central Florida. We skiied out at Sandusky Bay with The West Shore Water Ski Club.

You are kidding about painting your boat with spray cans...right?
