I did mine in rustoleum, let dry for 24 hrs then baked at 200 for 20 min
went from feeling a little tacky to hard as a rock. |

Luchog, it is in the earlier link, after painting you sand the raised areas to reveal the aluminum color.

Those are great looking covers!
I wonder if there's a way to leave the letters and lines in silver. |

I ended up buying the Krylon for the exhaust manifolds, but for valve covers I'd chrome or have them epoxied.

I agree with Andy, there's not that much heat there to be a problem but be aware that these rattle can paints (even engine enamels)are not that solvent resistant so you need to be careful when working around your motor with spills. One drop of gas on that freshly painted valve cover and you'll be kicking yourself. Even a smudge of grease can leave a problem when you wipe it off.

I've painted plenty of valve covers, or whole engines with regular automotive paint. Holds up just fine. I would just paint them, then sand the faces of the letters off with a piece of 320. Then you could brush some clear on the bare aluminum. Just an idea.

what brand you ended up buying? I did mine with gloss black high heat from tersuave..its for heat radiators and withstand 400 cº..i´m not sure how long will last...
The only part that is extreme hot are the out of the head to the riser so eventually if the paint starts to come off I will repaint only that area with the vht coating....the rest should withstand just fine.... |

I started stripping the old paint yesterday after dinner.. put the stripping gel and let it sit like 20 minutes..men that old paint was really hard..I had to apply like several coats of the product, scrub, rub, applyetc...I started at 10.30 pm and finished both covers at 1.30 am....still some little paint but will take it out with the sand blaster...then ready for some sanding and over the weekend I will paint them...
I got some pictures of the start and over the process.. will post them all together when i´m finished... I think I will go plain apple red krilon or rustoleum...high heat in red I don´t recall if it was available here.... |

I am sure a non rinkle spray paint would do I just did mine with a black hammer finish rustoleum, let dry for 24 hours and then baked in the oven fo 20 mins at 200 degrees. finish is very hard and looks cool (but not original). High heat ceramic engine paint would not hurt either and can be bought at auto parts store cheap.

I wonder if it can be done with some regular paint to use with a paint gun or needs to be high heat? or epoxy? Anyway I´m still getting familliar with the paint gun and sometimes I get to much paint and drips!!1 Well I´ll do it over the WE with pics to come.. I let ya now what turns out.... |

while i´m waiting for my engine parts to arrive I´ve been working on the exhaust manifolds, sanded and painted them (pics to come).
Now I´d like to do some work on the valve covers. One of them is pitted, and aluminum rusted with that white residue and the paint went off at the middle of it were the exhaust drops leaked over it. Its a 1" area that in bad condition. I gues they are powder coated? can I do a touch up or should I have them blasted and then powder coated? but how do I get the pcm raised emblem with the raw finish? i have to pc all and then sand the emblem or mask? I guess anyway i´ll have to do both valve covers in order to get the same red colour on them? what would be the code for that red? sorry for the long post... thanks |
