No don't do that, way more trouble than it's worth. Suck it out the dipstick hole with a hand pump. In this picture the shorter tube will go into the transmission. I suggest leaving it longer (this one looks cut) or glueing/hose clamping it on to the pump body. Do not let it fall into the transmission!

Thanks all.

I read through the manual a little and noticed the explanation of a COLD vs WARM dipstick reading. Just maybe, the higher marks could be for an accurate COLD (drain down from cooler and lines) reading. (you think??)

I will keep checking closely and will test exactly with COLD vs WARM.

Also, while on the subject, I was going to change the fluid this Sept.

WHAT IS THE EASIEST WAY TO "CATCH" THE OLD FLUID? I haven't done it before. From what I read, you drain from the lower hose connection. Doesn't look like much room to manuever that close to the bilge floor.

someone may have modified a V-drive stick which was longer, alot of the 71c's had screw in dipsticks. it does look like the full mark is a little high. as suggested check and re-mark

According to your measurements, it is approaching 1'' off. In the past, I had suspected that and ran it just near or slightly above the low mark. (to compensate for the difference in the overlap - just in case).

So now, the end of the dipstick is "low", and the low mark is "high"...

I got some good time in running her this weekend. I caught some late afternoon glass myself with our 1950s wooden slalom. (picture) Nothing like cruising on this antique ski behind the mustang in the late afternoon.

Oh, it's intentional. No one goes to the extent of spot welding two broken pieces together like that!!

BTW, whoever did the spot welding, had the heat and tip pressure cranked way up!!! But, it did the job!!!

THANKS! I will check the measurement.

The part that makes me think it was intentional and not a "break and just slap it together" is that the break lines (metal ends) don't line up exactly. They really don't look like they ever fit together (at least not in these exact two piece ends).

I have seen new lines marked on before so you could check the level when the boat was cold or to compensate for angle, but have never seen it done like that.

It sure looks like somone changed the level or used a different dip stick from another model! There's a real nice chart in the B/W velvet Drive manual that gives you the dimensions from the underside of the cap. So you don't need to go look it up in the reference section, here they are.

The overall length or the low point of the oil level on the original is 4.64".

The length to the high level is 3.81" from the underside of the cap.

If yours is different, post it and I'm sure Eric will comment.
