Yeah. The PO must have changed those bolts for some reason... I even have a different washer on mine. Thanks for the pic. I'm going to wire mine the same way. I'm just glad I didn't lose the rudder.
Thanks again for the help

I think the top and side were tied together on mine. I must have already clipped the wire in this pic, but take a look for reference.

Throw- My rudder's top screw is drilled & retained with safety wire. Your PO must have lost the original hardware. I would drill a stainless screw & use safety wire to fix it, if I were you. You might be able to get the right screw at a marine dealer if you don't want to drill it yourself.

Hey Guys... this site is awesome! We've been able to fix everything on our 79 Nautique with the service manuals.

Anyway, I do have a question. This last weekend the bolt that hold the rudder up... unscrewed itself, the rudder flip around backwards and the prop hit it. I was able to get the rudder put back together and the prop isn't too bad but... Is there a "fail-safe" for the rudder coming loose and doing this again? If I wouldn't have been on the trailer when this happened we would have lost the the rudder all together. Can you drill the top bolt and wire it to the steering bar? (like they do on airplane bolts?)

Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else? or if the people that had the boat before me just didn't have the correct parts on the boat.

Thanks,
Joe
