Would Fastenal or someone like that make the bolts?
Keeping in mind that I did not replace my primary stringers, just ground the glass off and re-glassed them. What I did was used stainless lags into the stringers, but I did not epoxy them in. I filled the old holes with epoxy and then drilled new ones. I believe I put 2x 4" and one 6" lag into each mount. I also put 5200 around the mounts to prevent any incidental water getting in there. My goal is to not have to remove those bolts too many times. I see at least once this winter, and would have to assume a couple more times through our time with the boat. I think the lags I removed were Home Depot specials.... |

I don't think your idea is bad but wondering if it's worth the effort just so the engine drops back down in the same spot. It really doesn't take much to run a lag in and out. Stainless hanger bolts are available but the longest 3/8" I can find is 4" in stainless giving you probably about 3" into the stringer. Some of the lag bolts used were alot longer but of course you are using epoxy which should make up for the lack of length. I certainly do recommend using something corrosion resistant. I'd have to guess when you took out the original lags they were silicon bronze which BTW is better than stainless!!! |

Hey guys.
This fall or winter I am planning on removing the engine from the Mustang. I have a shaft seal on the trans leaking a bit, and I believe a rear main seal on the engine leaking too. I have not tracked this leak down. I should have addressed the trans prior to re-installing this Spring, but I simply needed to be done working on the boat for a while. I used SS lags to put the front mounts into the stringers. The trans mounts are trunion style now. My question is what is the opinion on replacing the lags with lag studs that have bolt threads on the upper inch or two. Has anyone done this? I thought I had read about them a couple times. It seems like this would be a good idea because I can just permanently epoxy them in, and then use a lock washer and a jam nut to hold them down. Any down side? Interested to hear any advice. Mike |
