Just did my 81 yesterday, 3/16 for the old boats, not sure about anything newer but you could call DIM and ask.
I did not have to remove the fuel tank, plenty of room. |

You can’t change the wind but you can adjust your sails

My '90 took 3/16" goretex but dont take that as gospel... CC was pretty inconsistent so its best to measure your port if you can. Your method is correct except that you shouldnt have to remove the gas tank. A set of channel locks works good for the packing nut.

SN 1990 > can anyone tell me the size of the RUDDER stuffing box flax/packing ? I think Nautique says 3/16" ... not that it makes any difference, but that is what they said for my shaft stuffing box packing and it turns out I used 1/4" (for the shaft box) which is a better fit.
Also, any tips for repacking the RUDDER gland would be great, thanks. Assume for starters I need to take off the engine box, then the middle floor panel, then remove the fuel tank, then the floor board under that for good access to the Rudder post. From there, remove the steering piston, loosen the nut and pull old packing w/a flax puller. Replace that many wraps of new stuff, with cut joints offset. Should I use the Teflon impregnated stuff ? Hand tighten the gland nut, then another 1/4 turn or so w/a wrench ? That's a big wrench. I guess I need not put anything back until I confirm no drip ? thanks, cheers, John |
