No it's not, fully dry. From your comment I draw the conclusion that it might be needed to open it up?

Is it dripping water ? This is important . Needs to drip about 5 times per minute.

Opened the box in the winter, replaced seals and reconnected. The propshaft now is watertight with loss less of friction on the shaft. I can turn it by hand now, that was not possible in the past.
However it's still making a squeaking sound. Will try to tighten it with slow steps the upcoming weeks and hope it stops. Nothing running hot yet.. |

Just a check: If I look at that with the boat in the water it will sink, right?

at times when to tight it will turn the shaft purple in that area and cause it to work harden and become very brittle and will snap in that area. like Pete says take a peek

Rogier,
Since the packing gland isn't dripping, then I suspect it's too tight, will be running warm to hot and is what's causing the noise. Repacking may not be needed but, if it has run hot for some time then there is a chance that the packing has scoured the shaft. It wouldn't be a bad idea to open up the stuffing box and take a look. |

No, not dripping at idle at the moment. Have never checked it under power. I guess repacking might not be needed then.
Will check hot/cold! |

Yes it is realistic but may not be needed. Is the packing gland dripping? It should drip as the packing is water lubricated. About 4-5 drips per minute would be normal for regular wax/graphite packing. Did to have a chance to check if the gland is running warm/hot yet? If not, then tighten. If hot, loosen. If you end up repacking, the new Gortex (from Skidim) drips less. |

Thanks for the replies, I will try it.
I've got a tip somewhere to replace the wax cord. Is that realistic and then how to do it? |

Take a look at your prop shaft stuffing box. I've heard them squeak at low RPM's. Tighten it slightly (1/8 turn) and see what happens. Then, make sure the stuffing box isn't running hot.

Hi,
when powering down and returning to idle there is a short squeeking noise just before the boat is sitting still in the water. Could this be the prop shaft experiencing friction? How to solve it? |
