Another vote for the vacuum pump.....they come in handy for a lot of jobs once you have one.

Just did mine yesterday as part of winterize/tune-up on my 94. Used hand siphon pump $60 marine store removed approximately 1.5 quarts and replaced with Dex III. Just pump a handfull of times and the pump did the rest no mess.

You can get a push-pump from the hardware store (or a beauty supply if you are so inclined), sized for a gallon jug. It cost $2. I just put a small tube on it for pickup & another hose on the spigot. Pumped the ATF into a half gallon jug tucked in the bilge, didn't spill more than a few drops.
Last year I used a turkey baster (no not the one from the kitchen). It took forever & I didn't get half of it out. PS - The push-pump was someone else's idea from last year, just passing it along. |

Everytime I have tried to change mine I made a mess, it always ends up in the bilge. I got one of these mity vac for other reasons and it works great. I also hook it up to my oil pan drain hose, drain differentials etc.

I would just use a suction gun or the pump. I have heard the drain plugs are terrible to get out. i believe you want to do this cold as there will be more fluid in the trans versus warm when there will be a bit more in the lines and cooler.

Can someone walk me through best way to change transmission fluid, any tips would be cool. Looking at the Manual, I think I got it. My Cooler is mounted vertically, there is a hose that goes from an elbow fitting on the bottom of the Cooler to the top of the tranny. There is another hose with elbow fitting that goes from the top of the Çooler to the tranny, a couple inches below the dipstick plug, but, it doesn't appear this hose & fitting on tranny side is at the "very bottom" of the transmission to drain all the fluid out ... perhaps it is. I suspect I remove the oil cooler hose from the top elbow fitting on the Cooler, set this into a receptacle, pull the dipstick plug and drop the hose below the transmission to drain. My strainer screen is clean. Should the engine be brought to normal temp before doing this ? I have Dex/Merc to re-fill, will pour this into transmission via the dipstick plug. I'm assuming about 1.5 qts. I will do a final check of the fluid level once boat is back in water. Also assuming this the preferred method than pumping from the dipstick plug with a 12v fuel pump type of arrangement ? Thanks so much, cheers, John Tried the Search ... found nothing. |
