Getting the trans out isn't a big problem. If you have a engine hoist, you only need to raise the aft end of the engine. If you don't have one, a couple of small bottle jacks between the main stringers and the exhaust manifolds work great. Disconnect the trans/prop shaft coupling,the aft engine mounts and loosen the forward ones. Jack it up and unbolt the bell housing from the engine. I feel it's easier to remove the trans with the bell housing and then take them apart on the bench. Are you going to send the trans to Eric? Don't forget to put a new dampner plate in it with the rebuild. |

Gents,
I have a 1977 Ski Tique with a Borg Warner 71C with the RH drive. Here is my sad tale: Committed the cardinal sin of leaving the plug in. The engine compartment flooded with the summer rains, and the transmission was underwater for a week. Trying to be responsible, I changed the fluid in the transmission. Transmission was fine before. The seal on the fill tube seemed to do its job, and I did not see any water in the drained fluid. I got some Dextron III atf and followed the advice on the forums in the change. I did not drain the lines and tried to keep gravity from emptying them before I hooked them back up. On my maiden voyage after the fluid change, the boat initially ran fine nfor 5 min. In a semi-tight turn at 3/4 speed, the RPMs maxed out, and I felt the trans fully slip. The boat would move, but slipped at idle. I bumped it in and out of gear to get back. At the dock, the bilge had some of foamy pink ATF fluid. I hoped this might have been residual stuff I could not wipe up from the draining, and prayed maybe the slip was due to me not filling enough fluid initially. I refilled the trans fluid, and idled around. No such luck. The transmission fluid is leaking badly, and appears to be being slug around the flywheel. Seal I hope? I can't figure out why it went, except for perhaps I had the fluid level too low, not compensating for what I thought were still full lines. I would like to pull the trans and fix the problem. Am I on the right track, is there a recommended proceedure for the removal, and can someone (Eric Lavine?) help with a recommendation of parts that I should replace. I would like to look before I leap. Thanks for any help. If there is already a post of this somewhere, could someone direct me to it. Thanks. Keith |
