Picked up the BFN today. This thing has got some weight to it.   I was not expecting to feel it that much. 300 miles and the bearings were still cold. The trailer doesn't have brakes, so I took it easy on the stops.

Tomorrow evening the fun begins. I am going to go through it from bow to stern (or front to back because it is on a trailer?) and check everything.

Go to the Reference section here and scroll through the 1987 Owner's Manual, and the PCM Manual for all Fords and Chevys (1989). They are the closest thing to what you have, not much changed between those years anyhow.

might want to check the condition of the RWP pump impeller...Or direclty replace the one in there, not an expensive part and can bring you lots of headaches if its breaks..also the t-stat considering its used in salt water.

Engine oil change is around 50 hours or every 6 month.
Tranny oil around 100 hours or once a year.

Good one Craig! I never said I was great at spelling but not on the top of the list - my computer here at work doesn't have the automatic spell check so I always keep a email going. Copy and paste into it and then hit "spelling". Of course that only works if you think you've misspelled a word!! Sometimes I'll even "select all" and do the same copy and paste before posting! The bad ones are the words that can be spelled differently - I've been corrected on those via other members emails.

Man, it's not every day you get to point out something Pete did wrong. Even more funny when he's talking someone else's grammar and he spells grammar with an "e".

If you are running salt water you need to flush the engine every time you use it. For the trans, inspect the fluid to verify it is clear and red, not milky. You can get a suction gun and remove the old fluid and replace with Dexron III. It takes around 1.5 qts.

Thanks guys.
I will check the hose clamps. How about the tranny fluid?
It is running very smooth now, so I will try and get in some running time next weekend to see what I am dealing with before adjusting anything.
If I can find a couple of suckers to go out with me, I may tray and drown myself at the end of a ski rope.
I will update the profile and pics this weekend. I go Sunday to pick the boat up. I tried to take pictures the other day and as is always the case, one bad picture of the motor and then dead camera battery.

Bzirk - Welcome to the site. You bought an classic model that will hold it's value over the long haul.

I would tighten all of the hose clamps (don't forget the exhaust) with a ratchet wrench. Check the belt tension. Adjust the timing & carb. Change the fuel filter. Check the alignment. Don't forget about the trailer - bearings & brakes.

Hi all.

I just bought an 83 454BFN and am new to inboards and to this forum.
I have been reading posts for days and love all the info.

Boat was loved and taken care of by the previous owner (20+ years), but has not seen water in 5 years. Been stored under cover. Floor replaced, stringers solid, engine started monthly with fresh water flush.

I am going to run through the electrical, change engine oil, treat fuel and top off tank.
What other areas should I look at or change? Any regular mantainence I should do? How often should I change the oil?


Thanks for all the help you have given me already without knowing it.
