Yeah Mark, Damn you for bringing that SN down to Clinkerfest. I am a serious convert. Hopefully within the next year one will be parked in my garage. Just need to get Ol' Yella up to scratch to sell.

It is actually a Williams at first I thought it was a Hammond but does look a bit like a Ramsay also. Bryce the current owner confirmed at Clinkerfest it is a old Williams. By a strange coincidence it used to live in the same Caravan Park at Forster NSW where we had a permanent van setup. It was not used much but I used to quite often have a look at it when at our holiday "resort" always thought it was a Hammond. The boat was named "Saboo" then it is now called "Grumpy".

It has a 318 Chrysler engine with a dog clutch. Did not have much of a chance for any speed runs the river was very busy that weekend and these low sided flat bottom clinkers do not cope with rollers very well. I was keen to open up the 318 in Bryce's boat after driving Brians 318 rocket at GL Earlier in the day though, I did venture up to a quieter part of the river and opened up the SN2001 to impress a few of the other boat owners and hit 48mph. While touring back I happened to notice the 8 knot speed sign well at least we had the 8 part right Yes the SN2001 was a like a battleship compared to these older 15'-17' clinkers.
I will buy a old Hammond clinker myself one day. When I was a young squire my uncle had one. Always thought I would rebuild a glass one but all this wood talk has me looking for a old wooden one. Reid you will like this old Hammond it does go fast.Miss Australia

Older Aussie skiboats are very low sided flat bottom hulls. Most of the skiing in Australia is done in river systems where wind chop was never really a problem. With our small population boat traffic was never a problem like today either. In the 60's, 70's and into 80's there were quite a lot of small Aussie boat builders. The boats were usually 14'-17' clinkers that used a converted car engine and either a simple dog clutch with the engines mounted flywheel forward or a direct drive. It has only been the last say 10 years or so that they have been using commercial marine engines by Indmar and Mercruiser.
My 89 SN is light years ahead of anything built in Australian in that era. In fact it years ahead of my last boat which was a 97 model. It was a converted 350 SBC with a soft clutch. The marine conversion kit was spaghetti city.

I had one of these with a tricked up 350 in it, went like a rocket, didn't turn very well.

Yeah, the clinker caught my eye too Reid. Hull is kind of a cross between your speed skiff and the boats we are used to seeing. I remember a while back another thread about another Aussie ski boat that was very small, vary low profile, very powerful, but I dont remember the name. I browsed a bit after Lewy started this thread but couldnt find it.

Lewy, question for you. Don't you guys have a pretty good ski boat industry down there. Australia has always been big into skiing and practically invented competition barefooting. I know, CCs are the best and all that, but you guys go through a lot of time, effort and expense to find and ship boats from over here. Arent there good home grown boats there? I would think with the skiing history, there would be. I know the original flightcraft, before Malibu got a hold of it, was one of my favorite boats. If I could have found one in 96 when I finally took the plunge for my first ski boat, I would have gotten it.

Really neat Lewy. I'd like to know more about those clinker-hull boats. Most of those boats look rather small compared to yours. Are they rather fast as well? We'd love to hear a little more info on them.

The same weekend as the River Run in Florida a similar get together was held in Australia. Just a group of like minded people having a good time with older boats.
It is funny how many good people seem to have older ski boats. The yellow clinker is a Flightcraft Spectre forerunner of the early Sportster.
