The previous owner had put some taller, aftermarket valve covers on, so I had the stock ones put back on. They also changed the oil.

And as for checking the simple stuff.... I'm learning as I go, so these are some uncharted waters for me. A buddy of mine knows quite a bit more than I do about all this, so I'm going to call Southeast and hopefully it will be something we can work out. I'll keep you guys posted and again, thank you.

I always assume the simple things are checked first, but.....you know what it means to assume. yes do check your cable and it must be detented in the ball on the lever for proper operation

Eric, you sure this is not cable related??

Was any other work done on the boat besides tranny fluid change?

first thought generally and seeing alot lately, if its pump related you will have hesitation in both ranges, if mis aligned it will spin the bushings but still will engage but you will have to rev it up to get pump volume up.
1984? probably never out of boat and maybe just a bit tired also, reverse is a pretty cut and dry circuit, no rotating mass to apply the clutches and basically the oil goes from the pump to the control valve and right to the front cover and applies....no where really for the oil to leak internally, unlike forwar which goes thru the case bushings or seal rings, then to a set of bushings then on to the forward cylinder.....if i was a betting man i would say the trans is plain old just worn out and time for a freshening up

Yes they should and I'm sure they do know what to put in the trans. Tell them what's going on and get back to us.

Of course maybe they are doing some CC sabotage due to all the hard feelings with the BS they got from corporate!!

Pete, I took the boat in just for a regular service at Mastercraft of Orlando/Southeast, as I always do. I've never had this problem until yesterday. The boat is a 1984 SN 2001 with the 351W. Not sure on the trans, but maybe that can answer it.

it engages into reverse fine.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm getting a little nervous right now though. I'm not sure what they used at the dealership, but they should know the right fluid. I haven't been able to talk to them as it happened late yesterday. Maybe I'll know more Monday.

Did you take it in for the fluid change because of the problem? It's not real clear if the trans was doing this before the fluid change. Do you know exactly what they put in the trans? Does this dealership service I/B's or are they more tuned towards I/O's and O/B's?

The late engagement to forward from neutral could be a simple cable linkage adjustment but the slipping isn't. If you ran the trans slipping for any length of time then it will warp the clutch plates. There isn't any quick fix for this and the trans will need to come out/opened up.

BTW, what boat/trans?

Had the trans fluid changed last week at the dealership. Took the boat out today and noticed some issues. When putting it in gear, the rpms would rev to about 1000 before the trans would actually engage. This has never happened before. I also noticed that it seemed to do it worse if there was more weight/people on the port side of the boat. I checked the fluid and it looked ok. Anything else I can check? Could the fluid being over filled cause this? I haven't had a chance to call the dealership yet so I just wanted to get some input from some pros.   I also noticed it a few times when turning hard. It would slip and then catch, sort of like cavitation, but it definitely wasn't.
