Oh and one other thing I noticed is that when I turn on the running lights all of the guages are way off and do some crazy things.

Ok so after a weekend of running the boat for 3 days pretty hard, I connected a votlage guage strait to the battery in addition to the one on my dash. The guage that was connected to the battery stayed where it was supposed to and pretty steady around 13volts, however the one on the dash would drop tremendously when the accessories were turned on. At one point I was using the running lights and the blower and it was reading around 8 volts on dash but the battery stayed around 13 still. I guess this is just something i will have to deal with unless I want to run a whole new electric system strait from the battery with a new fuse pannel and switches.

I had a problem with my alternator not charging last year. The first thing I did was blame the battery or alternator. We tried everything. Guess what it was? The belts were worn and were not gripping the pulleys like new ones and thus were slipping and not charging. Don't know if this would help but you may want to look in to it.

Yea, when I am running no other dash buttons , I pull 13. If say I am just idling and may turn the blower on, or nav lights volts drop to 12 or 12.5.. Soon as turn a switch off, volts go back up to 13.

Hey Chad,
I bet you right. Maybe you pulling a different volt than shown on the dash. My guess is that marine battery is good you got, but the altanator is not charging it properly.

I want to see if I am getting a "true" reading on the dash guage as compared to the what the battery is really putting out. I would think if I dont get around 13 volts directly at the battery when running then that would indicate the alternator isn't charging properly.

I dont want to shoot you wrong but I dont know if the volt meter will tell if you have a bad alternator. I am sure there is a tool that will do so.
The car battery worked better huh.. Wow! Maybe you do have a bad alternator.

Its a Energizer Marine Starting Battery with 500 CCA I believe. The one that was in there before was just a cheap car battery. I am going to grab a Voltmeter and clip it strait on to the battery this weekend and see what it does at the battery level. I would think that should tell me if its and alternator issue or not. The thing that is really confusing to me is that the old car battery seemed to do better than the Brand New Marine Battery.

Hey Chad,
Eric got you on this one. Check all your connections and roll from there. Mine shows 13 when rolling, and If I turn a switch on or something volts will drop a little but return back too always 13. What kinda battery did you buy? I really like the battery I have, Car Quest Marine battery with the 850 CCA.. Works great..

a fully charged battery will show 12.69, while running you should be seeing a minimum of 13.00 volts unless you are having alternator problems. it may be charging but not at potential, check all of your connections especially grounds, once distrubed something may have come loose......98% of ALL electrical problems are connection related

Just curious if anyone else has had this issue.. I just bought a brand new "starting" battery not a deep cycle because the old one seemed to be getting weak and slow starts at the beginning of the day. Now this new one starts great but the voltage wont read over 12 when its running and if you have say the blower running it drops down to 10 on the meter. The old battery would read about 13 when running and 12 with acc's on. Does anyone know what would cause this voltage drop? Oh and if you turn the lights on also its game over. The meter reads around 8 or 9. The wired part is the batt never seems to have any issues starting the boat even after I have had the stereo on for a while without the boat running.
