they are tapper bearings so yes little hard to get to tight unless you don't back them off. The pads will drag some but you still should be able to rotate the wheel if not you have to much drag and need to back of the star wheel on the adjuster for the brakes.

Yeah I used the channel locks to get it where it's at now, the problem is that it's hard to spin the wheel/tire. The new pads and the new drum drag a little. I at first thought that maybe the mounting flange wasn't true to the axle, but I know it's aligned correctly because they were still dragging when I fit them together off of the trailer.
So I guess I'll just keep running the nut down with the channel locks. I'm assuming your thought is that I can't get it too tight using the channel locks right? Thanks for the help. |

run it down till it stops using a set of channel locks, rotating the tire as you do this, back off the nut to the first slot you can install cotter pin.
It's a good idea to run the cotter pin through the holes in the spindle before you install the nut so that you know where it is radially, usually there are two holes 90 degrees apart, this gives you a visual reference for the slots to line up to. |

So I've read numerous times the process on torquing on your axle hubs...but I've got a twist to the normal process as I'm installing a new hydraulic brake setup and my new drums & pads are dragging enough that I can't get a feel for the bearing load at all. So the question is, is there another way to know how much to torque down the nut? Currently I ran it down and judged by the axial play, by pulling/pushing the hub back and forth and kept tightening until this play became nearly zero, and I stopped there for tonight to wait on others' opinions.
Another question on the topic...what grease do you guys recommend for marine axles? |
