Tom,
Good one!!

McMaster does have round Buna-N rubber available in 6" lengths. Some hollow tubes too. If you could get some dimentions off your old plug you may be able to replace just the rubber.

We sure want to keep it original!!

Rubber expantion plugs to fit holes from .433" to over 5" are available at McMaster-Carr They are on the second page of "test plugs" so click on page 2010 after you open the link.

They even have them in stainless!! I had to go this route on my X55. The drain plug in the transom is a unusual size for marine. It's a 1&1/4". The old one was starting to dry out and I could no longer trust it.

I found a rubber plug that fits the hole on the tranny.

Ugh, that one might come back and bite me. LOL

Anywhoooey, I see that barbed washer on the original. How does that get removed and the new stopper put in without messing anything up on the dip stick?

the problem with the rubber type is its an expansion, so they put the rubber on and then a barbed washer and tack it on underneath.

Ahh, since mine is a 78, the one that Pete posted would work. Mine's just as Pete described.

I will take a look for a proper stopper at the hardware store tomorrow.

mid 80's? i personally like the pipe plugs...easy to repair and never had a problem with them....BW probably thought it was outdated and switched to the expandable rubber type...plus they could get 30 bucks for them because it really is a wearable item

Eric,
About what year did they change? I know the early Velvets had pipe plugs with the dip stick welded on the bottom.

Does any place sell replacement rubber seals for the VD dipstick? Mine finally has fallen apart to the point that I need a new one.
