Keep an eye on your gal/hr, mine has gone as low as 3. I didn't have the original prop very long so I don't know if it is a big improvement, but I'm pretty happy with it from an old boat with a carb. We do pull hydrofoils, kneeboards and the occasional wake board with no ballast other than the crew, but if anything it seems to get better with more people in the boat.

The 328 ACME Prop worked great. I had a much better hole shot and better pick up when dropping the hammer at lower speeds. I also ran the same speeds as before with lower RPM's. It had little to no effect on the top end.
*Side Note - the nut that comes with this prop is much larger than the original. Therefore, the nut actually covered the hole for the cotter pin. The prop guy had to use a smaller one to make it work. Thanks again for all the advice, Kerry |

On a related note, while I was talking to Vince at DIM one day, he said they had had succses with taking a little off the drive shaft in boats with this problem. Then you can run what ever prop you want, might be an option if someone did some damage to the shaft as well as the prop.
Tim, when I lay the 328 next to a 422 that I have it looks like it is about an inch thinner from the side, I'm not sure what I'm giving up because of that, but the 328 was made to deal specifically with that issue in those boats. It was even a little difficult to get the prop pulled in there to take off the prop it is so close to the rudder. The hull was based on a Sothwind from what I understand, it has more lifting strakes and maybe a deeper V than the earlier 80's barefoot hulls. Ithink it would make a great candidate for a top speed boat because it wants to climb out of the water, but the VDrive is a little slow out of the hole so you wouldn't win any drag races with the DD boats. Maybe on of these days do some work on her an find out. |

Tim it is a prop to rudder clearance issue on these.

Sorry I took so long, but Acme 328 is what you need. There is a clearance issue and the prop was designed to deal with that. I love mine, in fact it just came back from the shop and I've been using it intstead of checking for new forum posts. I got a better hole shot and lost no top end at the time, and I even gained another MPH since it got back, I'm sure the stout tailwind helped some. MPG's seem to be very good as well, but I never though they were low with the stock prop.

Update: I talked for a long time w/ ACME (Jim); he was very knowledgeable. He told me there is a 99% chance the 13 x 15.5 #328 Acme propeller is right for my boat. Some how, like 1% of the Excel boats in those years have a 1:5:1 ratio, which would call for like a 17 pitch. Anyway, there's a 30 day money back guarantee on the prop in case it's in the 1 percent. I'm ordering the prop today. I'll post the outcome after it's installed on my Excel.
Thanks again for all your help, Kerry |

TRBenj makes sense.
The gear ratio of your 91 Excel 351 and my 92 BFN 5.8 HO can differ (that's why I wrote "about the same"). And I'm not the first owner, so don't know if the 14 x 18 is the original prop. Can also remember a post reading about a 14 x 16 prop for an Excel(try the search here and on planetnautique.com) And if you know the ratio of your boats transmission, you can ask for advice on a newer design. I like the Acme far better than the classic Michigan. Price will be about the same for a new one. |

Are you sure that was the original prop size? If there were different transmission/v-drive combinations, they would use different props. I would highly recommend finding out what you have before buying anything. Then I would call Acme and/or OJ and see what they recommend for that boat and powertrain. I guarantee there are better performing options available today than the original wheel. Steve, Im not following you on the prop to rudder clearance issue. What did you determine to be "insufficient clearance"? Unless the blades hit the rudder, I think youre fine. I ran our BFN up to 56mph with less than 1/4" of clearance from the Acme 612 to the rudder without any issue. |

Thanks for the info. Michiel200 that was what I was looking for. I will probably go w/ the 14 x 18 3 blade that originally came on this model boat. P.S. It was a 91 Barefoot Nautique that drew me to buy this boat; I love their wakes. I'll post back the results of the new prop when I have it in installed next week. Thanks for all the advice CCFans!

I own a '92 Barefoot with a 5.8 HO PCM, pretty much the same as an Excel.
This boat came with a 3 blade Michigan 14 x 18 prop. Did quite well, 5100 WOT, 43 m/h. Installed a Acme #328 (four blades, 13 x 15,5) this spring. The only 4 blader regarding Acme Bill for an Excel/BFN. Acceleration even better, 45 m/h, WOT 5000, less spray. Used the coupon from Delta. |

My 91 barefoot has a 1.21 to 1 ratio so I assume yours does as well which makes the 15.5 pitch sound good. I looked thru the acme book at the local dealer and it listed the prop for yours and they made it special for the clearance issues. I would check the book at marina or call Bill and he will help. Let us know what you get and the performance numbers max rpm and how it changes the all around performance please.

Kerry:
We tried to re-prop our 92 Excel with a 4 blade and had "issues"........ due to very close clearance from shaft end/prop to rudder. That affected what prop would actually fit on the shaft and the performance character of the prop. Wish I could recall what props we tried but the first 4-blade wouldn't fit with expected clearance from rudder and second 4-blade performance stunk at ski speed. Your manuals will tell you V-drive reduction but you need to speak with someone who has "Excel-specific" experience because performance and fitment is NOT quite like a direct drive or later V-drives........ Wish i could give you specifics but I just can't recall. Just get hooked up with someone with a great swap policy! |

Don't be perplexed. The simple fact is the prop was never put on properly!! Even the guy at the prop shop may not put it on properly!!!
proper prop installation Lapping is recommended by Acme. A note to lap comes in the box with every new prop. |

Thanks. I was hoping to hear from folks w/ the same boat; I trust them more than the guy at the local propeller shop, although I will have him put it on. A guy at planet Nautique w/ a 92 Excel uses a 13 x 15.5 BTW, I've had the boat 5 years, just had it serviced by the local CC Dealer. Never had any vibrations or prop issues. I'm still perplexed how it happened, If I hit something i never felt it.

Wait for other member´s with that boat TXfoilhead or LKG..
That prop was not properly seated in the tapper...your whole setup was loose caste nut and cotter pin... Then use pete´s tutorial on how to install and seat the prop on the shaft..can´t find it now... |

Before you call Acme or OJ, I would make an attempt to identify your drivetrain. Maybe its common knowledge (although maybe its not if Buxton couldnt tell you), but the final drive ratio is going to play a pretty important part in getting you in the right ballpark to start with. I know many v-drives run a 1.5:1 reduction, and I *think* the Excel falls into this category, but Im not 100% sure. I bet Woody at SECC would be able to tell you that, as well as the original prop size. I would try him or another competant dealer as a starting point. Then I would take that info to Acme/OJ and get a recommendation.

You could either start a prop debate or call Acme, OJ, or Delta (all of which have numbers in the "links" section) and get the correct prop.

I lost my propeller last weekend on the lake. I had a ski rope caught up in the prop, so i descended under the boat and fixed the problem. I could tell the prop was loose when untangling. Long story short, like an idiot, i put the boat in reverse and spun my prop off.
I don't know the size/pitch of the prop designed for this boat. I've checked my owners manual and records w/ no luck. I even went to the local Correct Craft Dealer (Buxton Marine) and they had no idea what to order without a serial number. Does anyone know what type of prop (size/pitch) is designed for this boat. It's a 1991 Nautique Excel w/ 351 PCM. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. |
