I have aftermarket manifolds/ headers whatever you want to call them. I have never seen another set like them. They curl back and somewhat over the trans. There's no way to get it out without taking tge exhaust off

John,
One winter I did a dampner job on my X under a tarp in the boathouse with a electric heater going. Not the most ideal working conditions since that big chunk of cast iron never really heated up!! I had to keep putting my gloves on!! It took me about a hour to do. There's a brief explanation of using bottle jacks under the manifolds in this thread. By just tilting the aft of the engine up, it also makes it easier to get the exhaust hoses back on the engine. You just slowly lower it back into position while guiding the hose on. |

I highly doubt that. Ive snuck a tranny off a 302 powered (read: narrower block) Ski Tique without pulling the exhaust. Its less than an hour's worth of work, even if youve never done it before. If youre well versed, its a 15min job, tops. |

I'm sure I could take the trans off no prob. I just don't want to take the chance of screwing up. On my boat you have to take the exhaust manifolds/pipes off too and it's just too much with my work schedule right now. It would take me a month to do it myself haha. I really just don't want to have to stress out about it. I want to drop it off and pick it up in perfect condition.

John,
How far are you from Eric? If you don't feel comfortable pulling the trans, he can do that as well. I feel he'll do the job better and for less than a unknown marina. (remember their mark up) BTW, peolpe with little mechanical skills have pulled their trans by themselves. We're always around and we would be glad to walk you through it. You would need to do a alignment after the reinstall but that too has been done by some without problems. There's a thread on it and to my knowledge a vidio is going to be made and then posted here on the alignment seminar coming up at GL this Friday. Whatever you do, don't forget to install a new dampner with the trans. EDIT: I see you're a couple hundred miles from Eric! |

I got my info from a local marina. They said depends what the probl
is but they mostly just rebuild or buy new ones. I'd love to send it to Eric but I don't trust myself to take my trans and exhaust and all that apart. I want someone to do all that for me so I know it's done right. I might take it to a place around here called no wake marine. They specialize in wakeboard/ inboard v drive boats. Anyone know if they are any good? |

How did you draw that conclusion? Most will choose to have their transmission rebuilt by someone who knows how they work rather than attempt the repair themselves. Even the most mechanically inclined here arent interested in tackling that job, for the most part. Personally, I would send mine to Eric at FFM because he does this for a living- he knows all the tricks that most people would miss... things that a shop manual wont tell you. For the price, its hard to go wrong- I would suggest giving him a call. |

John, I don't know who has been giving you this information. Rebuilding is common. Call Eric as advised. It's his business. Costs run about half of new. Eric can fill you in with exact figures. If you got this info from marina's, then they don't have competent mechanics. Also, lot's of marina's will pull a trans and ship it off to Eric. Then, mark up the rebuild!!! |

I have an 82 nautique 2001, and I was on
the water when my boat just randomly wouldn't go into reverse. Reverse worked all day until the last minute. I checked the linkage and cables and they are all good. I played with the lever on the trans and it clicks into forward and neutral but doesn't do anything when put in reverse. Any idea what this could be. Thanks for the help guys |
