Is that "West" as in "West Marine"? Just curious as my current bottle of teak oil is almost gone and it's time to buy.

Andy,
Yes, the private labeled store brand. I have no idea who's making it for them. All I do know is I've been around Tung oil/"danish" finishes enough to realize when I smelled the stuff it wasn't a organic tung oil product. I opened the bottle in the store and took a smell. It smells more like ATF than Teak oil. BTW, some do use a mix of ATF and other oils as a teak oiling product. I think it was Tim (TRBeng) that provided a link or the formula at one time.

Pete, I think they are using Star Brite products.

Chuck, good question. They're taking the 5th on that one.

Wondering too, did they use steel wool on it, that could cause discoloration.

Bruce,
I don't feel they got it clean enough. The black is indeed a mold. I like to use a pressure washer being careful on the pressure by keeping the nozzle at a distance so you don't tear up the wood. I also have a cheap plug in the 15 amp circuit washer that doesn't develop lots of pressure. However, using a pressure washer on a deck may not be practical. Also, the type of oil used makes a big difference. Most teak oils are made from tung oils. These are organic and the mold actually feeds off it. Any mold that's left down in the pores will quickly come back with a Tung oil organic type Teak oil. The last bottle of oil I got was West brand "Golden Teak Oil". I read the bottle carefully and picked it because it was more of a synthetic oil. It did work lots better and no mold even after 2 seasons.

Did they do some aggresive scrubbing? What oil did they use? Cleaner?

My sons are detailing this boat which has a teak deck. They used cleaner and brightner on it and it looked great, but 4 days later this black stuff is showing up? It is mold that is deep into the wood? Any ideas on how to get rid of it?
