I would prime the oil galleries by pulling the dizzy & using a drill directly on the oil pump. All it takes is a screwdrive bit. The current owner may not want to do this, but it will save the cam. If nothing else, pull the coil wire & run the starter until oil pressure registers on the gauge.

Gland packing should be replaced but not the highest priorty.

Also, do an alignment as soon as you can!

Hey Dave....I have a red/white Southwind 18. I think we may have exchanged a few emails. I was wondering if you found one.

I think you hit all the key things to look at when firing up the boat. Get the old gas out, and change the oil. Those are the keys. Put fresh gas in, and fresh oil, and try firing it up. You may find you have to do even more....ie....plugs, points, etc, to get it running 100%. I would also do a compression check after its warmed up.

Even try to take it for a demo ride if possible.

What color is the one you found? Is it an 18 or 20? Any pictures?

Hello folks,

I owned a late 70's Correct Craft Southwind 18 through the 80's and have wanted one back ever since.   I am looking at buying one identically to what my family owned back then but it has not been running for 7-8 years.

It has been stored and the owner has been putting drops of oil in the cylinders and turning the crank to keep the pistons/ rings lubed, etc. about 3 times per year.

Aside from changing the oil, tranny fluid, draining the fuel tank, putting a new impeller in it - is there anything else I should do to get this running properly?

It has been meticulously maintained and above average for its years.

Should I expect the drive shaft seal to leak since it has sat for so long?

Your advice is greatly appreciated.
