It takes about 12 hours of at least 18 degrees to freeze a car engine, which is exposed to the ground. Our boats are somewhat insulated/protected by the hull and motor box, better protection than a car.

That is good to know because here in North Carolina we get a couple of nights were it will dip to just below freezing for a night and we used to freak out. Then 2 days later it hits 80 without a cloud in the sky. This can happen into late November. Then again in the spring starting in March same thing. Could hit 80 during the day and the next night it hits 31. A friend of mine just wraps his engine up in moving quilts and has never had a problem.

You're cool!  It takes several days of below freezing to get to the engine. I wouldn't worry at all.

Thought I would never have to ask these but anyway here I go..seems we will be having a cold winter..before I got to this site I was never aware boat needed to be winterize...
Now that I have more info I start to worry about somethings temps here during the winter run in the 40-50 range but sometimes in the morning they may hit the 33-36 mark...then over the day they raise to the normal average.. This particular week some 30º morning are expected... Should I freak out? my boat is in a indoor boat storage unheated....so it may be some º higher than the outside.... I use the boat during the winter at least once a week...so going over the winterize process is kind pia... I guess I´m fine as its beed like this since I own the boat and never heard here about an engine failure due to freezing... Yes I´ve seen one but it was from a boat in a colder area near a ski resort |
