Depends on who/situation

First time invitees are usually on me

Subsequent times out, I don't ask but appreciate and accept when they offer

Some folks I ski with switch whos boat on a regular basis, so no cash changes hands, it all comes out even

Usually, when I am the guest, I'll bring a can of gas along.

here is another blunder from the same kid, I had a rotted transom on an aluminum boat, easy fix, remove the rivets, dig out the ply and install new.
i came in late that morning, bought 2 pieces of 3/4 ply, the good stuff, I explained step by step how to do it, he wanted to make a cardboard template, i explained no, you have 3 measurements top to bottem, top corner to top corner, bottem to bottem corner, lay it out on the ply and cut it,
well he goes onto making 50 measurements including the outboard engine opening laying it all out on the ply.....my blood temp went up just a couple of degrees and again i explained 3 measurements, drop it in and outline the opening.......ok, we got thru that, 3 hours later.
I gave him the benifit of doubt, cooled down and went on about my day.
this is where it gets good, go check to see what he is doing and he is doing identically the same exact thing on the second piece, dead middle of the ply..thats when my cork popped, WTF!!!!!! he got so pissed at me and went home. Its 12:00 oclock and the wood is not in yet.

this is the way you do it, 3 measurements, drop it in, outline the motor opening, cut it, fit it, mix some resin drop it on the other piece (not in the middle) screw it together and saw it....1 hour tops
sometimes the Brunstucky school system baffles me. maybe its me?

it was the dead of winter, 8:15am and i was out of Propane for my lift truck and i tell one of my guys to run the tank up the street no more than 1/8 mile away.. about 10 minutes later he comes back in the shop, I ask him where the propane was and his reply was he didnt go get yet. Well what he did was, he went out and cleared all the snow off of my Suburban, fired it up and was letting it warm.
Now he just pulled in 20 minutes earlier with his truck, nice and warm, no snow on it...the gas station is within walking distance. fcn moron, cheap as ***************,

I'm definitely on the side of pitching in. If I go out with a friend for a few pulls, I usually throw them a $20 and help with everything I possibly can. I like to bring people along and teach them and I don't mind footing the bill a little bit. After the first couple times it is nice when people pitch in, whether it is gas money, beer or even helping with loading, unloading, or cleaning/wiping.

It is definitely expensive to go out there boating, and it is nice when people understand it and pitch in to help with the cost. Too many times not pitching in and I stop inviting those folks.

I didn't even get a boat ride! I'm kind of random with my generosity, I think it all works out in the end though. I'm certainly not counting.

BTW, on the weekend, I'm not sure which would be the bigger cost, beer or gas. It depends on the weather. Good weather gas, bad weather beer.

you know, its funny, I had a communion for my daughter and bought 2 cases of beer, those bastards polished that off in about 2 hours and let me know i needed more beer, my first reply was "this is a communion not a drinking party so i did agree to go get another case and took the main beer drinker with me, i call him 4 to 1 cause he drinks 4 beers to my one...well we get to the store and he waits at the front counter and tells me to go get what you need to get, in other words i thought he was going to kick in...he didnt
so the past weekend was his kids birthday party and the mfer lets me know he is only buying 1 case of beer, we ran out real quick, he tells me i need some cash from you to get more beer. FU its your party.

I look at it this way, when you invite distant friends for a one time deal you buy, but if they tend to stray to your house every weekend you make them kick in. One of the biggest reasons i dont have a boat in a boating community is because guys would give you 5 bucks drink all your beer and at 8:30 at night would grab they're towels and boogie leaving you to pull and clean the boat. its costly to run a boat and if you divide the payments and all the monies invovled even if you get 50.00 from each person, it doesnt cover the cost

As far as gas, when & invite friends with families out, how can I accept money?    It would be like asking someone over for dinner & then charging them for the food.

Different people, different policys... I can't drive myself or spot for myself so I am generally not looking for anything but consistent attendance... I will teach or take anyone with interest.. those that never help out one way or another will stop getting invited.

For me I would rather have someone that physically puts the gas in the boat, helps bring the equipment in and out, shows the boat and equipment respect while it is out there, and helps cover and hoist at the end than someone who just offers money. Beer is always welcome... in cans.. keep your bottles in your car my camp and boat dont need broken glass.

I try to keep the beer and the skiing separate. One or two beers is ok but most people can't hold back....

Pontoon boats are for beer.
