its on the front cover at the 12:00 oclock position, pull it out and rest the transmission upright on the input shaft (wont hurt a thing) and drain it, noticing what comes out...if the oil is clean than chances are the trans is in good shape.....this is the only way besides taking it apart to tell its condition....that front cavity has a tendency to be a storage compartment for sludge

doesn't matter now as the pump is indexed the same as the old one, arrow spinning RH clockwise at top of trans which would be counter-clockwise from the prop side. So that's all good for my 2001. This pipe plug you talk about is on the top oil pump end yeah? just remove and what should i see, all things being good?

cheers Eric, is it as simple as just turning the pump 180 degs on the shaft tho, i have the manual that shows how it should look for a lefty. Also I will look at getting the seal replaced.

btw, its an 1/8 npt allen head plug, if sludge rolls out......then you decide

yes, probably should replace the front seal though, and put some sealant under the bolt heads....the number designations do not necessarily mean the pump is indexed correctly, true they are the same transmission, one for a left one for a right.....just be sure the 004 matches the arrow as it does on the 003. Make sure both input and output spin freely of eachother, if it is tight, that is a sign of warped clutches.
On the front cover at the top will be a pipe plug, this is for reverse apply and normally all of the sludge gathers in this cavity, it is possible to get some of that sludge out and further telling you the condition of the trans, remove it and flip the trans and notice what comes out.
Plain and simple, no re-new it additives, straight Dex/Merc

Hi I have just bought a second hand Velvet drive 10-17-004 to replace my 10-17-003 that is not well, apparently the only difference is the rotation. I have had a look at the manual, is it just as simple as removing the four bolts on the front of the trans and turning the pump 180 degs. Can I do his without taking the pump all the way off the shaft.

Also this is a second hand trans is there anything I should do prior to running the boat, i thought about filling with oil draining down, filling again partial run drain down again then fill with oil and run.

I am assured the trans is fine, just want to be safe rather than sorry.

Any advice would be great
