Ron - I think you are fine with 2 quarts.   I cannot read my oil level either - the ATF wets out on the dispstick plating so much I can't really read it.   I ended up with an extra quart in the tranny - I thought I had emptied it & refilled per spec, but apparently was not really empty.   Point is, there was no adverse consequence - no blown seals.

After reading the instructions again i followed step 5 on page 39 which says to fill it to the top mark when cold. However when its checked hot it is well past the mark. I guess its better to have too much than not enough. I've got a little over 2 qts in it. I still don't know why i don't have a flat spot on my dipstick? Page 37 says all transmissions after 7/15/1990 have a flat spot. oh well, thank you for the help.

Ron,
The manual in the ref section states to just rest the dipstick on the top of the case. Cold, I'd say it would be the bottom mark since trans fluid expands when it gets hot. Take another look at the instructions in the on site manual.

Thanks guys, My owners manual is slightly different and covers several models. I have a couple more questions.
Step 4 says to set the dipstick in position. Does that mean all the way in or just to the first o-ring?
When checking the fluid cold it says the oil should be to the full mark. I'm i guessing thats the top mark?   The reason i'm not sure is that it would be at the same mark when checked hot or cold acording to the instructions.   I have the dipstick that is at the bottom of the three that are pictured.
When cold, the oil is at the top mark as these instructions recommend. However, when its hot the oil is above the top mark. I hope i don't have too much in it.
I think i could have a good career at writting instructions and manuals. I'm sure i could make it more clear than the guys who wrote this one. I thought i was stupid but my girlfriend is a teacher and she was baffled as well.

Ron,

Here is the page from the manual.
And it is very specific on how to do it.

Ron,
Take a look in the reference section under manuals. At the very bottom is the PCM 1993 manual. I just looked at it under the part that covers checking the fluid level. It's very specific on how to do it.

What "manual" are you using????

I have a 1993 pcm 1.23/1 trans. My owners manual is useless, it says that the dip stick has a flat side. It does'nt! How do i check the fluid? The dipstick has 2 O-rings at the top and 2 lines on it. Do i check it hot or cold? Do i put the stick in to the first o-ring or do i put it all the way in? Where should the fluid be on the stick, at the 1st or 2nd line? I have asked 2 people and i've gotten 2 different answers. I just got the boat this year so i hope you will excuse my ignorance.
