Weren't they black anodized in 97?

Don't know but brochure states teflon impregnated...

If the coating is avertised as having Teflon in it, then it's defiantly anodized. Lots can be done with the process besides colors. Different hard coats and lubricities.

It will be very difficult to paint. Your best bet is to find a anodizer and talk to them. There's a good chance they can strip it and re anodize.

Brad if you still have the skylon and still use it. Let me know if you need the plastic mesh sleeve to slide over the pylon to prevent this from happening again once you figure out what you're gonna do.

Any opinions regarding cost comparison between re-anodizing and say, a used pylon for $175?

I've been debating either replacing or refurbishing the ski pylon on my '97 (the victim of a Skylon by the previous owner). The cheapskate in me says, "it's only got a bunch of surface scratches. I'll just remove it, sand it down and repaint or.....hmmm, maybe polish and keep it with the bare aluminum". Repainting might cost more than replacement since it appears to be a special process and paint and polishing would render it "not original".

Any thoughts?
