Say you're an aircraft restoration guy? Can you machine parts or fabricate some smaller parts? Shoot me an e-mail, I need you or someone to spin me in the direction of a 'fabricator' that can pop some parts for us CCFan guys. My 2 'fabricators' are seemingly like not interested. Thanks, Marty Mabe mtmabe@northstate.net |

You will love the little 'Skier! This hull is one of my favorites. Looks like you have the dash shifter. Does it have a toe/heel gas pedal?
You can be assured it will turn heads when you fire it at the dock! |

The original owner passed away and a good friend of mine was storing it at his warehouse for the family. The engine was headed for a rat rod and the boat was going to be scrapped, so it was on death row and got a pardon.
This is my first inboard, had outboards since I was twelve, still have several. I had an Evinrude dealership in the late 70's to early 90's but have always wanted an old wood inboard. This is a lot less work and will sound just as good. |

Eric,
If you come across the spacer that goes in front of the big bearing at the output end, I need that too. :) It beat the groove up some but I think it will clean up. |

that would be from the lack of a damper, i forgot to look for the shaft....I will look today
I would say your style was one of the ones that doesnt use a damper because of the spline damage/wear....good indicator of what the rest of the trans will look like inside |

I pulled the cover and pump off the transmission to get a better look. The inside is relatively clean, just some sludge in the bottom. I ran a magnet through it and there is no metal chunks. I am not going to put this back together without another shaft, this one has seen better days.
The flywheel shows witness marks of whatever was on it, dampener or coupler. Crankshaft end. |

Eric, I feel you're correct. I'd say the smooth area is a pilot into the solid coulping. Bruce's input is the one that would engage into a dampner plate. |

Looking at the input shaft on Jack's, how would that mate up properly with anything? It just doesn't look like you could get enough contact area, but I've never seen one before.
Congrats on the boat, glad to see another '63 American Skier on the site! I've got a BW in mine, no experience with a Dearborn. |

Different looking input shaft than mine.
Maybe that type is meant for a dampner? Mine goes into a fixed coupler on the crank shaft. |

Eric, Did you forget what a Dearbomatic looks like? Jack, Measure the OD of the input shaft, count the number of splines it has and get a straight edge to measure the distance the end is from the flywheel. Eric is correct that the B/W Velvet will bolt up to the same bellhousing. If the splines and OD turn out, you'd be able to use the same dampner plate. |

Nice find Jack! I've not seen a blue top before and from the looks of her she is a true diamond in the rough. Welcome to CCFan and keep us all posted. Looking forward to seeing the progress and bringing her back to life. If you need some motivation then join us in Astor Fla March 25-27th for the annual Saint Johns River Run. You'll definately get something out of it and don't worry about bringing a CC. There will be plenty to choose from to catch a ride.
Keep up the good work! |

Thanks for the help everyone. Priority one is to keep it original.
Eric, If you want to part with the Dearbo's let me know I am interested. You can never have enough spares. There is no dampener or coupler on it now. When I got the boat the engine was just sitting on the stringer and blocks, the trans was in the front seat. The bolts for the coupler or dampener were in the bell housing. The BW is a last resort if I can't find parts for the Dearbo. I'll definitely put a dampener on it if there is one available. There won't be much progress on it till the weekend when it warms up and I can pressure wash it. I'll post more pictures after I blow all the dead critters out of the hull. Jack |

Peter, you are correct .. There was a late style dampner installed on the port engine and a coupler mounted on starboard. I had never seen a dampner on on a Dearbo, live and learn.
The BW will swap out with the Dearbo, I did this on Karens stroker motor. There is a weight gain of about 50 pounds with the Velvet Drive tho. The smaller tranny should work just fine with the lower hp rating. My vote "keep it original"........boat dr |

The early Dearbo's had a solid splined coupling that bolted to the flywheel. I don't know exactly when but the later ones came though with dampners on them.
Jack, I'd get a dampner in there if possible. |

i believe a BW will plug right in, pretty damn sure but not positive it will bolt right to the bellhousing, also I believe it does have a 26 spline input shaft which is the twin to the BW, so it shouldnt be hard to locate a damper. i do have a couple core dearbos and possibly could have the input shaft???? but i myself would do some research on plugging a BW back there.
can you take some more pics of the damaged shaft? and post? also pull the trans back and lets see what type of damper is in there |

The single carb set up was used on the 256 135 hp engine. There's blue paint on the heads, so maybe the block and heads were swapped out? It's not unusual to need another tranny or 2 for hard parts when doing a rebuild on those Dearbos.
