My son has written two papers on the Cuban missile crisis and I have read a few of the books he has used. Scary times. We were really "this close" to the big one. Only time in US history we have been on DEFCON 2. 9/11 we were on DEFCON 3 (not as high). Because nuclear threat was so real during that time of the cold war, people just kind of accepted that it could really happen. You are right Bruce, JFK really played that smart. The cuban missiles reached a stage of readiness as the crisis (just 13 days) went on and they shot down one of our pilots in the height of it. Could have gotten ugly.

Eric, it seems that the guy that is promoted the best and has the least gaffes gets elected, no matter what his qualifications are. As far as looks, you got an attraction to Obama? Chris Mathews said Obama gives him tingles up his leg. I quit watching him after that.

But, they got to know what they're doing or we all pay. From what I've read, during the Cuban missle crisis, JFK listened to his military advisors for a week while they tried to talk him into nuking the USSR saying we could win a nuke war with them. He kept putting off the decision and fortunately the crisis ended. I'm glad he didn't jump on board with them. A president over his head might have.

Eric, you have such a jaded outlook,LOL. I'm more of an isolationist, but we need leaders that got some experience prior to putting them in office. Two years before OBama was elected, he was a State rep. Do you know any of your State reps? Do you think their ready for the White House? BTW, I like Obama. I just think he's not up to the job.

How about politics and religion? On march 20th pastor Terry Jones (the guy who threatened to burn 20 korans on the aniversary of 911 sparking riots in islam countries) of Florida holds a moch trial for the koran in Florida, finds it guilty and has an internet pole to determine the korans sentence, it gets burned and a video posted. The media for a change does not allow itself to get used and ignores the whole thing, the video gets less than 2000 views. A week later during Friday prayers, President Hamid Karzai denounces the incidient and calls for Pastor jones to be arrested (Koran burning in the US is "protected speech" and not illegal). The call is picked up in mosks in Afghanistan and by Friday night twelve are dead at the UN headquartes in Kandahar, this Mornig 8 more dead and 61 injured in rioting. Who is responsible for the deaths of these 20 people? Should they be charged and held responsible?

It amazed me too, Larry. Especially that the majority of people said they wanted a moderate that could work with both sides, which McCain was, and with all his experience. Presidential elections are nothing more than popularity contests.

This always completely flabbergasted me. In the grand scheme of things, my job is pretty unimportant and insignificant. But it took me 2 degrees, a professional license and over 20 years of experience to get it. If I had come and applied for this job with 2 years of experience on my resume, I would have gotten laughed out of the building before I even sat down for my interview (not that I would have gotten an interview)

Now the President of the United States, clearly a more significant job than mine, is won by a man with a couple years experience in the Senate. Did not get his job for his experience or ability. Got it because he was not a republican associated with George Bush, he could read a speech that is hopeful and visionary and he had an adoring press that was willing to totally ignore substance.

I saw a clip of Trump this morning stating that we had to stay in Iraq or else Iran will invade, which he's probably right about, but then he went on to say we had to take over their oil fields and pay ourselves and our alleys back with oil. Eric, how do you think that would go over?

I believe Sarah Palin took away the chances that any woman canidate be taken seriously. The Right side MSNBC types will rip her apart. There is that dem/rep double standard. They may try it with Trump but with all his clout they may fear for their carrers. Idon't know how his ego would react to being commander in cheif.
True words you speak of the current President. Inexpierienced, ineffective, unprepared, uncooperative, and non transparent sum it up well.

The true sad part is neither side have a canidate that you can really get the masses behind, let alone trust.

Eric, Trump is an interesting candidate, I like alot of what he says, he thinks way outside the box compared to a professional politician. I also see some similarities between him and our previous govenor Jesse Ventura. Jesse had some great ideas while campaining but once he got into office he abandoned them for more traditional politics as usual. Both are narcicists, Jesse could not take criticism, and eventually melted down from negative media attention. Rather than fighting with career politician he spent the second half of his term fighting with the media "Jackels". We cannot afford to have an ineffective president for the next term. It is a tough question to answer.

As for japan , it is a mess, from a foriegn policy standpoint I think we would have goten a bigger bang for our billion bucks helping Japan clean up their nuke plant than we will from throwing a ffew hundred tomahawks at Lybia. That would be a humanitarian effort.

Barrack is proving that experience counts when selecting a president. He had none, and it shows. Can anyone state what his foregien policy is? He makes stuff up on the fly, and then it is all reactionary and slow. He is not a leader. His actions have no guiding principles.

Speaking af guiding principles how about Michele Bachman. No fear, she follows her principles and is very consistant in her message. She does not pander for votes. Like Reagan she would rather advocate her position to change the polls than change her position in reaction to them.

needless to say i was over at the VA hospital listening to the maintanance guy griping about how he should be making 37.00 bucks an hour instead of the 32.00 he is currently making.....I informed him that there are people out there with 4 year degrees taking jobs for half of that.....also needless to say, the collective bargaining has hit Ohio....
another update as expected, was a corrections friend of mine is shaking in his boots because the Grafton prison went private.
Japan is melting and its only a matter of time...one problem are the parts suppliers to GM and the other auto companies are starting to see a shortage of parts.

Eric,I have been really busy, plus things kind of switched to forgein affairs, I have my opinions (of course) but that is really not my area of expertise. Of course it does not seem to be our presidents area of expertise either and it certainly is not stopping him. Lets recap the situation in north africa. He has to go, he does not have to go, he needs to go, but him leaving is not the objective. This is a humanitarian mission in which we bomb the begeezers out of retreating pro government troops. It is not a Us lead mission, but we lead it anyway until we could pawn it off on someone else, specifically NATO, of whom we are the biggest source of funding. (by the way, Isn't NATO the NORTH atlantic treaty organization, which hemispher is africa in, I forget). We will not have boots on the ground. Today we have CIA boots on the ground. WTF, How is this a change from Bush? It seems every president can find a good war when they are getting killed on their policies. Hows that?
