If snapped plates, wouldn't the problem persist and not be intermittent? If that's the case, them I'm really inclined to think that this would be cavitation

Eric, by engagement I guess you man how is it shifting? It shifts fine. Perhaps it was cavitation. It was rough and the boat was rocking petty good. I'll be in it again later in the week and want to check it out more closely then

missed it, how is engagement? rarely do i ever hear of one of these transmissions slipping in reverse, you really dont power up in reverse, and it would be hard to notice.
slip means heat so the oil would have a burn smell to it, it is possible the plates could be snapped and not spread aprt yet. can you think of anything else that may contribute to the problem your having? a pressure gauge will definitely help diagnose the problem if you have access to one |

I surprised Eric hasn't said anything. Maybe he missed the post? To me, 612 hours on a Velvet is low. It just wasn't cavitation was it? |

At the White Lake Mini, put several hours on the boat. Noticed on two separate occasions that the transmission slipped a couple of times in reverse. Not consecutive reverse shifts...an hour or so apart. Checked transmission fluid this morning and it looked fine. It was about 3/4 of the way to the "Do Not Overfill" line. Checked the fluid with boat on the trailer and on level ground. Engine/trans had not been run at time fluid was checked so they were cold if that makes a difference.
Boat is an 88 Ski Nautique with the PCM 351 and a Borg Warner Velvet Drive Model 10-17-004. 612 hours and I'm thinking based on the looks of the paint, bolts etc. and some knowledge of the previous ownership that the transmission and engine are orginal and have never been worked on or removed from the boat. What can I check here? My fear is that I may need a transmission rebuild. Is this the way a major trans problem normally presents? Advice please. |
