Mark - Great question.
I went a little overboard when I got our SN 3 years ago & replaced items that were probably OK as is. If it is running good, I would leave the plug wires alone. Pull a couple plugs & look at the center electrode. If it shows signs of erosion or if the insulator is black, probably time for plugs. Remove the distributor cap & check it's condition, the rotor & the points. Check that the centrifugal weights are loose. If you haven't already, check the condition of the Raw Water Pump impeller. If that is cracked or has a bad 'set', time to replace it too. Check your shaft packing for about 6 drips per minute. It can be adjusted if leaking too much. Look at your belts for adjustment & signs of cracking. Same with you hoses, check for cracking & loose hose clamps. Check your timing & adjust the carb idle mixture. Check that tranny oil, or else make an appointment with Eric to get it fixed! Good luck & enjoy the boat! |

My 1986 2001 with a 351 is relatively new to me. Last summer was my first season of ownership. I just de-winterized it this weekend and took it for a run. It ran incredibly well. So the question is, when/how do I decide what maintenance to do? Sort of like "If it's not broke, don't fix it", but I know that is not correct. I have read the manual and know what the recommended intervals are. Should I just go ahead and replace all the plugs, wires, points etc and be done with it? Also, if anyone can point me to a post that lists out hoses and sizes it would be great. Thanks for the help.
