Now, I don't want it to seem like I'm coming down on the guy for making a mistake...I myself got a rope tangled in my prop last summer, once. And only once, now the rope comes in after every rider, like Chris said. That's how I knew taking the platform off would help, because that's what we did.
My issue with the guy was, ok, sure, I'm a stranger just pulling up to say hi, but I was offering to help, and the guy decided to be a hardass to me. And I could tell the guy had no idea what he was doing because their boat was in the worst possible place to pull a skier. There is a break wall around downtown, with an opening that lines up with the mouth of the river. Now, this break wall does provide some protection from the wind, but this guy was in the opening (the little circle on the image below) which is where all the big freighters and cruisers pull through to get into the river. If he had gone a quarter mile east (little red arrow) the water goes from 2 foot swells to little ripples.
Not sure which bay you mean, but I'm always open to suggestions for calmer water. Sandusky?

That story is very reminisent of why I have a new Acme 422 on my boat and a rebuilt OJ Legend ready to be picked up at the marina. Luckily someone came out of their house that windy day and towed me home. It was no picnic trying to get that plastic coated wakeboard line off the shaft, and I did have the comfort of having the boat on a lift.

Adam, great story. You did the right thing offering to help. The guy's pride was on the line & he wasn't going to give up that easily!
We always pull the line in after each rider. Before we started doing this we drifted over the line & it got wrapped around the prop even with the engine off. Not fun holding your breath under the boat - scary for me actually. A dive mask would be of no use in our murky water. |

I always keep a dive mask on board you learn fast when this happens. The swim platform on my 08 210 takes two men to lift I would attempt to remove it in the water.

been there and done that. does make one feel a little bit dumb. especially on a windy day it is easy to drift over your line while someone gets ready. but why be a tought guy...maybe that guy pulling up can help...or at least has a sharp knife!
Don't you ever head up to the Bay for some calm water naut? joh |

Thanks Adam, I needed a good laugh tonight!
What a DB Master Crap owner! I keep a knife in the boat just for this occasion. I've never had to use it but I can see it happening. |

I don't see many ski boats on Lake Erie, so generally speaking, when I see someone with a one, especially one with a tower and boards loaded up on it, I'll cruise over and say hi.
I see such a boat out on the water today, boards on the racks, speakers on the tower, even tower lights, so I head towards them. Now admittedly, I'm not well versed in Master Craft's product line, but it looked like a relatively new boat, with a big X-10 on the side. There's a girl sitting on the platform with her feet in the boots of a wakeboard, but they don't look like they're in any hurry to go anywhere. So I pull up and ask if they've found any calm water, as it was very windy out today. The guy's response is, "I got a little advice for you, don't drive your boat over your rope." I look at where the girl's sitting on the platform, and sure enough, a guy's head pops up out of the water out of breath. He tells the guy in the boat that the rope's wrapped around the prop good and he can't tell where the end of it is. So being the nice guy that I am, I offer to help. "No dude, we got it." Like some kind of a tough guy!!!! So I told him, if you don't want my help, that's cool, but if I was you, I'd take the platform off while you do that, you might be able to reach the prop without having to swim under it every time. "It doesn't come off." Ok guy, good luck. Like I said before, I don't know anything about Master Crafts, but I find it very hard to believe their platforms can't be removed. In any case it sure was nice of the guy to tell me not to drive over my rope before he pulled his tough guy act. HAHA |
