I almost got hit this weekend. Guy rubber necking with several kids in a tube behind him. Boat had a tower on it and a big giant "N" on the side.

Let me start by saying I dislike tubers too. But I must admit that I have pulled many tubes in my life as recently as this season, so each to his own. For me, pulling a tube behind a SN is just wrong but it has introduced so many people to the world of water sports.
I will say it is all about being lake courteous. As soon as our tube comes out; off to the middle of the lake I go. I grew up as a 3 event skier, barefooter and show skier so I know the importance of sharing the water and wake control. Not to mention the countless days skiing the Brazos. Anyone caught not using wake control when on a river was always politely spoken to and taught how to drive ‘for others’. |

OK let's face it. People are always going to do stupid stuff on the water with boats unfortunately. Responsible boating comes with education and experience. To isolate tubing as the Devil of the Lake is totally absurd. IMO tubing like many sports have their isolated few that act irresponsibly which can give the whole group a bad rap. Unfortunate for all of us is that these isolated few cannot take the time to learn the sport in a way that is safe for all. Which intern is going to lead to more and more regulation for all. Gone are the days of interning on and spending years learning the craft. Although along the journey let's be careful whom we point figers at as the ones to be pointed at exist in all facets of skimming on H20. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTm2cGndvN4&feature=related

Dave,
I've got a feeling most of us have similar stories from way back in the days when we were younger and not as smart!! I've got a few!! Maybe you can get Charlie at GL to tell you a few - he loves to tell some classics every once in awhile!! However, my son seems to have "out done" me. He has gotten better with a few extra years under his belt. |

overmy head, you are not alone.i too had a friend challeging my driving abilities.i had a 19ft laveycraft that would do 55mph all day and handled great.it took a few tries but finally thru him on WOT turn.he went to the hospitol the next day due to the water impacted into his ears.to think of what could have happened on so many occasions is scary.

In my younger days I had a bayliner with a 125 outboard. While I tried to be curtious to other boats on the water I have to admit I had a sadistic streak when pulling tubers. One day I was challenged by a 300 pound guy that I could not dump him. He rode backwards in an old style tube with his butt at water level and a cigar in his mouth. It took awhile but I finally launched him. As I circled back proud of myself he growled at me "You drive like a girl" and climbed back into the tube. I had downed a beer or two prior to this and combining that with a challenge to my manhood pushed me past common sense. To this day I cannot say for sure what happened but I am guessing there was some water in the bilge, and as I was trying to improve my drivers rating I slid over a wave and the boat dropped onto its side into a trough. The prop left the water, I saw lake 3/4 of the way up the driver side window and witnesses on shore said they could see nothing but the bottom of the boat. Luckily no one got tossed out and there was no injury or damage. Scared the responsibility right into me. I can mark that as a day when I grew up significantly in terms of boat operation. Since then I will not drive the boat if I have more than 1 drink. I remind myself that my passengers lives and the lives of those around me are in my hands, and I much prefer trying to give a quality pull to wakeboarders over abusing tubers. Young, dumb, and full of cum is a bad combination. It is amazing so many of us get a chance to grow old.

For thousands of years men have felt the irresistible urge to go to sea, and many of them died. Things got better after they invented boats.

Today's Tuber report - Saw a driver of a I/O, with tube/rider out back, get up out of the seat & climb on the platform to adjust the rope. This is while the boat was in gear!
His young daughter (I assume) had the presence of mind to move into the drivers seat, I imagine she was getting a little nervous with no one driving! It wasn't because of his request. |

Ok, I wrote a comment to Boating Magazine and it's been posted!
"Tubing has got to be the most unskilled "water sport" you can do. Get out there and get the people behind the boat up on skis or boards. Don't promote the the crazy driving habits that cause trouble and screw up the water for the people that are talented. Your article is truly not appropriate for good boating. I'm shocked that you even published it. Did you get "help" from the tube manufacturers to do this? LOL!!!! Pete " |

Catch this - yesterday I see a 16 ft flatbottom with tiller steering. 3 tubes stacked in the bow. Driver cannot see ahead yet he in on plane. He had a passenger up front giving him directions on which way to turn.
I am not making this up!! Yesterday was a good day to stay off the water! |

Don, Excellent idea!!! I actually showed my wife Al's picture and she didn't think it was very funny - her first reaction and statement was something along the lines of "why did he have to use a Tique to make a tube Tique"!! Our Tique is really her "baby" so I can see why she got pissed! Of course, it doesn't take much to piss off a woman!! BTW, I copied Al's picture to my computer and will put it in my Photobucket account. I have a feeling I will be borrowing it from time to time!! |

I am not sure but I thought I did a write up on here a few years back on how to pull a tuber, I will have to read the boating magazine article for comparison.

That's dirty pool Al...especially for dumb people like me who are gullible (or bored) enough to look through the reference section to find it. And yes, I did that.
