Thanks guys! That's exactly what I wanted to know!!!! And thanks Buffalo for the pics. That also confirmed another question I had. I have a RR engine but was pretty sure they used a gear driven cam so the distributor turns the standard clockwise way as a regular SBC.
I'll let y'all know how it turns out! |

Ford and Chevy took different approaches on how to build a reverse rotation engine. Fords use a chain and spin the cam backwards (same direction as the crank). Chevies use a gear/gear drive so the crank and cam spin in opposite directions. That means that RR Chevies have a unique timing set, but use the same distributor gear as a LH engine. Fords use generic timing sets and special RR distributor gears.
CC has generally used RH props in order to offset the weight of the driver at speed. It has nothing to do with what side of the dock they would prefer you to park on. |

Im confused then! why would a ford or a chevy be any diff on the way the motor turns? Dont they all turn the same way? Isnt the reason why they turn right hand "I think" is because when pulling skiers with no one elese on the boat is for ballance. Because if you had left hand with no one elese on the boat the boat would want to pull to the right. Or did I get that all backwards? Thats why you always dock on the left side of the boat because its eaiser!
Connorssons, was the 383 for your boat? if so I would love to talk to you about the conversion! |

Look back at what Waterdog said and then study those pics a little longer. We agree that the front of the cam will be turning the same way as the back of it? |

Try searching on here for "DUI" or "Performance Distributors". Several here have them and like them a lot- I run them in 2 of my boats.
Im not aware of any other marine rated HEI style distributors, FYI. |

Sorry if I got the drive wrong, But Im talking about the cam gear that connects to the distributer. Not the one that connects to the crank shaft. I like the pics tho, cant wait to show the pics this winter of the re-build to the 383, then come up to Lanier and have a small 2-6 boat reunion in OCT Hope so any way. And maybee your son will take leave from Calli

If its not gear to gear drive what ele'se would it be? If im correct, dont all cams have a gear for the diss, and timing? Not unless im getting confused!! ; ) If so I LOVE learning from all you older bucks on this web site I think that im the youngest buck on this website trying to give out info and so far it hasent even compared to all the experience, knowledge and wisdom as some of these other guys!!! I had a DUI in a Ski-tique (chevy) very happy with it. The distributor turns the same way std. or reverse rotation (if its gear to gear drive) Most small block chevys are gear to gear timing sets.

switched mine to HEI! all I can say is awsome. This winter when I do my re-build to 383 Im going with a DUI, HEI system. I was very lucky when I got my boat, it came with a PCM 350 from factory and im a chevy guy too! let me know how it goes for you. Also remember to get the right rotation for the cam gear for the new distributer. I.E. left hand or riht hand rotation,

I'm always fighting with my ignition. I've done several different EI conversions and always gone back to points which soon give me headaches again. I'm looking at doing a HEI style conversions and wondered if any of you have any experience with the marine performance guys. Here is a link below. Also, I have a chevy, NOT a ford.
