BW Velvet drive pump installed backwards?

Pulled the transmission last night and, yes, the pump was backwards. My mechanic-buddy, who has little-to-no experience with boats was shocked and amazed to discover that the motor runs in reverse rotation from the way a car motor turns. Moreover, the pump on this transmission has two sets of holes inside the tranny so you can set the pump both ways, depending on the rotation of the engine.

To make a long story short, we reversed the pump, and now I have go-power! Look out, fishies, here I come!

I put my boat in the water Sunday and started it up with the newly-rebuilt tranny and had no go-power. The prop shaft would not spin.

I called the very helpful people at skidim (disclaimer: the tranny was locally rebuilt, not by skidim) and the fellow there told me I had possibly mounted the pump at the front 180 degrees out of whack. So I guess I get to pull the tranny again and check it out. Oh fun!

When I pulled the tranny the first time, I also took the bellhousing off, too. But I'm wondering if I have to do that or if I can just pull the tranny.

The boat is a '69 Barracuda with 318 Chrysler.
