out of all these years of describing installing trannnys into the bellhousings, i failed to mention dowel pins, in the past dampers have been damaged on installation because of the weight of the trans bending the damper, so its a good idea to make a pair of 6" dowel pins out of a pair of bolts....and guide the trans in

You can pull the trans off the bellhousing much like pulling a manual trans off a car.I forget how many bolts there are,but at the bottom about 5 and 7 o'clock there are 2 studs with the nuts on the engine side. The dampner is sort of like a clutch plate except it mounts to the flywheel much like a pressure plate would. It will make sense once you see it.

thanks again and sorry for having to repeat yourself... Since I'm pulling the motor and trans to replace the rear main seal I was just trying to figure out the best way as I'm pulling the motor and tranny together... I know the bh has to come off but will the tranny   seperate if I take the bolts off the bell housing or is this damper plate bolted to the flywheel which I will need to seperate 1st... Can;t I just unbolt the bh from the block and the whole tranny with the bh will come free ? Sorry if you have to answer again for the3rd time but that is why my wife can't stand me

I think I already answered your question but I will give it a second try.

you can take only the tranny off, inspect the springs on the damper plate attached to the flywheel and if replacement is needed you will need to take the bellhousing out to pull the damper plate. this might save you from taking the starter out too.

Or you could go full lenght on this, pull the BH, take the starter out to have ir refreshed, replace the damper and so....

I'd pull the tranny, inspect the damper plate over the flywheel, if it needs replacement you will take the bellhousing out too.

I was wondering how to remove transmission from motor, I have an 82 351 with motor and tranny out of boat..
Do I seperate the "bell housing " from the block and then remove the trans or do I seperate the trans from the " bell housing "... I' m used to working on small block chevy's with torque converter so please forgive the ignorance/
