If the prop turns half way with ease then gets in a bind, the transmission is out of alignment.

If the engine engine will run in neutral and not in gear, then the problem lies within the transmission and NOT the damper plate. The damper plate spins with the engine regardless of being in gear or not.
Pull the tranny and rebuild or replace. |

I would:
1) Put a socket wrench on the front crank bolt (inside main pulley) and try to turn the engine over by hand (removing the spark plugs will make this easier. 2) If the engine will not turn over by hand, then I would seperate the transmission from the engine and look for broken damper plate springs that could be jambing the ring gear against the bell housing. 3) If nothing evident, then try turning the engine over again. If the engine now turns, then the problem lies withing the transmission and you will need to rebuild it. 4) If the engine still does not turn over, you have a major engine failure and time to pull engine for tear down to discover what failed. |

I have a '86 SN 2001 w/ 300hrs, the other day after driving boat at 3000 rpm for about 8 min I slowed to dock boat when i went into neutral something felt "funny" so I pushed trottle back to idle speed and it did not go so I went back to neutral then to reverse and I heard a "bump" then the motor shut down. thinking something was caught on the prop I took boat out of water to inspect to find nothing there shaft is not bent. prop would turn by hand a half a turn forward then locked up will not spin foward or reverse. I have never had any problems with boat until now not sure what to do . transmission gone?? never made any funny noise or anything any help would be great
