When you add the weight of the windshield, dash, helm, seats and battery to that of the driver, youre talking about a pretty significant weight shift towards the front, even though that shift was less than a foot. Like HW said, the 87+ boats tend to be 1-3mph slower than the earlier 2001's. The '89 with the 1.23 seems to be an exception though... for some reason, most people Ive spoken to can eek 46-47mph out of those boats. Like it was alluded to above, '89 was also the first year for the AME4000 (vinylester) resin. |

I want to build something like this: http://www.the2001.com/modules/gallery/albums2/album01/2001_G.jpg I have not found a boat that I want. I am going to wait until the winter because I figured prices would go down. I never grew up around water (from the desert) and I have not a clue how to check stringers. I would imagine you can see a piece of them if you open up the engine compartment? How else do you check them when looking at a used boat. |

Not given, Yes, it will be difficult since the stripe is gel coat. You would need to re gel both hull sides. BTW, most of our members here are better at restoration rather than modifying to non original! The gang over at PN or WW may have some ideas!! Any pictures of the boat you're looking at? How are the stringers? |

I am looking to buy this boat for wakeboarding. I am on a tight budget and I will wait around until I find the boat I want.
I would like to remove the old Ski Nautique striping and lettering, is this difficult to do? |

The later ones had bigger cockpits and slightly smaller area in front of the windshield. This had the effect of pushing weight forward. At least passenger weight. Not sure what else?

Hwood, are you referring to the fact that 87 and up had a more cockpit forward deck than the previous 2001 boats? That would've been the only weight distribution differences, right? I don't question your fact just curious as to the rearward weight you refer to. |

Seb,
Yes, it's a vinylester resin. The switch was made due to all the problems the water absorption of the old polyester creates. |

What was the story on the epoxy? Something different on the layup of the hull?

I think he meant 89 was the best of the 2001 era Ski Nautique. It has been proven the 82-86s are 2-3 mph faster on top than 87-88s because of the rearward weight distribution. Everything else you mentioned is true.

It all depends on your use of the boat. There are better (flatter) ski wakes from some of the newer boats, and you can get a better wake with the newer V- Drives. If you're looking for a great old budget wakeboard boat, 2001's are hard to beat. 89 does have the 1.23 transmission, which is said to be a good thing, but the single exhasut is a downside for some. All of the pre 1993 boats have wood stringers and will at some time need a full replacement job (read big $ and lots of man hours). 2001 hull design was the same from 1982-1989... limiting yourself to an 1989 may have you waiting a while to find the right boat, where expanding your year selection would broaden your options. |

Thank you. I read that the 1989 was the best year of ski nautique because of the transmission, the way the motor was set flat, direction the motor turned, and the epoxy.
Is this all true? |

A 454 optioned 89 Ski Nautique will be tilted and bolted to a 1:1 velvet drive along with the loud dual exhaust.

The cradle was introduced on the Ski Nautique in 1980, so all 2001's have them. |

89 is also the first year of the Power Plus 1.23:1 transmission as well as the single exhaust outlet and muffler. By then, it also had the pylon going into the metal engine cradle set up, although I believe other years had that too.

The answer is yes if it is an 89 model year boat with an 89 model year serial number then it is a 2001 series hull.

First off I wanted to say this site is great. I have gotten a lot of useful information from it.
I have a quick question, I am looking at buying a Nautique 2001, were all of the 1989 Ski Nautiques the 2001 hull or just some of them? Thanks, Dakota |
