I don't know if the originals are "free-backing" shoes or not but there is that pin on the side you slide down and forward to lock out the cylinder. I keep a bungee chord on mine so it's not bouncing back and forth.

Yes that safety cable will lock the brakes if it gets pulled out.

I tore the non-functioning brakes out of our 88 many years ago, don't know if I'd try to put drums back in or discs.

the surge brakes on my 88 CC trailer haven't worked since I bought the rig over a year ago. The PO disconnected what I believe to be the master cylinder in the hitch assembly. Based on what he said, it sounded like the cylinder had frozen up. Since he didn't tow much, he wasn't concerned with it. I tow about 1000 miles per year and although I don't think they are necessary, I'd like to get them working again. I've read some of the other surge brake threads but have a couple of questions that I didn't see referenced in the other threads.

1. What allows the boats to be reveresed (down a ramp, into a driveway etc.) with these brake systems. With the boatmate trailer in my last boat, there was some sort of solenoid that released the brakes when the vehicle was put into reverse. I think it was tied to the wiring harness reverse light. Since my harness is just a 4 wire I don't think my trailer has a solenoid setup. Is this correct?

2. Regarding the safety wire cable. Is the purpose of this so that the if the trailer comes loose from the vehicle, the cable is pulled and the brakes lock down. Is this correct?
