It is more important that the water be out than antifreeze be in. Although, antifreeze is good for rust protection.

If you decide to add more antifreeze in, you don't have to start your motor all back up and everything to suck it in. You can use the "pour" part of drain and pour. That method is described in many of the manuals, I know the 1993 Engine manual for sure. A lot of threads discuss it too.

One more quick question. Just got home and saw antifreeze on the floor, culprit is that the starboard side manifold drain has been dripping slowly, should I be at all concerned about this (manifold not being full of antifreeze), or just let it be and fix the drain plug? Manifold was drained completely and then sucked up the antifreeze through hose when I winterized. Thanks

Thanks for the help fellas, much appreciated, unfortunately it is time to winterize. Going to Nashville this weekend and the deer hunting is going to be getting pretty good around here after that, and I also have a new paver driveway to install to make the wife happy

Mark, it sounds like you are concerned that no water was going through the cooler at all.

It is possible for some see weed and stuff to get past the strainer and lodge on the intake side of the trans cooler. It is good to check periodically. It usually just adds resistance, doesn't totally stop the flow of water.

If it was totally plugged up though, you'd have no water at the Raw Water Pump either!

Mark,
Pulling the hose off the RWP did the draining. You just drained from the other end of the hose!

A bad cooler will typically show signs of water in the trans. The best way to check it is to pull it and do a pressure check. The oil side is pressurized to about 10 PSI and then you stick the cooler in a bucket of water. If you see air come out the water side, it's bad.

That good to know. The cooler is about 12"-15" down from the strainer, which is located above the tranny. I should mention that when I pulled the hose from the RWP, I held it down to the floor and let all water drain completely. Maybe that is why it was dry. What are the chances of tranny coolers going bad and are there symptoms if one were to go bad? I'm always paranoid and alert, constantly checking my guages and listening for strange sounds when operating the boat being that it is 16 years old, I seem to worry about things. On the other hand, she runs like a champ.

Depending on te position of the cooler in the suction line, many will drain most of the water out by gravity. I'd say that's what happened. As long as nothing cam out, you're good to go!

Good morning Pete,

Hose was hooked up right after water strainer, so there should be water getting to it correct? I did start draining manifolds, block, pulled hose from RWP first, then pulled the tranny hose about 5 min. later.

Cooling water is always going through the trans cooler. Where did you have the garden hose hooked up? Before or after the cooler?

Hey guys, when I winterized this weekend I ran the boat for 15-20 minutes off the garden hose and when I pulled the bottom hose from the tranny cooler, nothing came out at all. It was bone dry. Is this right? Or does tranny cooler only function when the tranny is actually engaged. I was expecting something to come out of there. Got me a little worried and want to take care of any issues this winter. 96' Ski w/ 1:23 tranny. Thanks.
