Brian - Great link on RWP maintenance. I noticed their picture looked like the blt wasn't aligned well either. I think these came from the factory misaligned - not good for belts.

Today I changed the impeller on my 1990 and oriented it just like my former 87.No water came out the exhaust.........Hmmm. After much head scratching, I realized that the 2 engines rotate in different directions, and the pump must be reversed. Big "duh" to me. If you are easily confused like me, make a note which way the engine turns with a brief turn of the key. Turn the raw water pump pulley this way in a sink half full of water by hand and make sure water comes out the top hose connection. Once the light came on, my frown turned into a smile. I don't mind telling you how dumb I felt.

Also, you might want to check the pulley alignment before you take it off.
Reason being that it might not be very aligned as is, & if you don't recognize that before disassembly, you will be trying to figure out what you didn't do wrong later, if you get my drift. Put a straight edge on the pulley & project the line over to the crankshaft pulley. Should be within 1/16 inch. I don't think mine was aligned well from the factory & I had to shim it into alignment. |

It is real easy, very common mistake to re-install the water pump 180 degrees out. As mentioned above pay attention to the configuration of the pump when it is removed. If re-installed 180 degrees out it will want to suck the water in instead of push the water through the motor. about 1/4" deflection on the belt should be good on the belt.

Make sure you know for sure which way the pump goes back on. Take pics and label it (not on the pulley). There is enough play in the bracket to get the belt off pretty easily, if that is what you meant.
