As it turns out it's a little of both. That's where my original idea started. I do wish the bilge pump would get all the water out but doesn't. On the plus side-the paint on the bottom of the pan will get a little longer to dry this time. |

+1 on the POR-15. It won't rust again! Just don't get it on your skin or you will wear it for 3 weeks.
"My pan is good and I shouldn't have an issue anyway except that it sits in the water all summer." Greg, maybe you should reset the float switch on your bilge pump too? JK, I re-read your post, I think you mean the boat is in water all summer, not your oil pan! |

greg,be careful using undercoating type product if you any kind of corrosion on your pan.its the same pricipal as wet stringers covered in glass.its never going to dry once it gets wet and its just covering up the cancer thats spreading.iam not familiar with por51[spelling?],but i was told that it nuetralizes any corrosion and seals.you can take a hammer to it,tough stuff.couple guys i work with have done some restorations with it and swear by it.

Gary, I missed this post of yours and just wanted to mention that "Gold zinc" is the cheapest plating out there and provides the least amount of corrosion resistance. |

Thanks for the offer Eric. My pan is good and I shouldn't have an issue anyway except that it sits in the water all summer. That fix is high on my spring priority list, and for the pan, I used an etching primer and the 'ol pumpkin orange.
I can see myself the day after I get a lift..."why did I put that crud on there?" |

Yea Gary, I'll have to get after her!
The pan is semi-special. It has a bottom drain and is larger capacity than that 1 at Summit. It's a GM pan, but wasn't used in many applications; P-30 chassis I think. I saw a cast aluminum pan on ebay, but I wasn't sure it would fit. Thanks for that info Marty. Sticky would be a mess. |

Greg, when Amy waxes the boat she should be doing the pan too Is that pan special or is it automotive?
Anyway what I'm thinking about is one of these with the plating,or getting yours done |

Some undercoating stays tacky. I'd get a can of the trunk speckle paint. We have a dark color and light color.

Is anyone here familiar with the spray-on bed liner or undercoating? I'm considering using something like that on the bottom of my oilpan or maybe on the whole pan. The way my engine sits, the bottom of the pan is pretty low to the hull and any amount of water in the hull splashes it constantly. The paint from last time didn't hold up.
What I'm thinking of is like the end of our favorite oil filter. Something that would be tougher. What do yall think? |
