Thanks, Pete. I'm getting right on it. Why the EI? Just being a Newby, I guess; thought it'd be more efficient or something..(truth be known: it was inexpensive and something easy to install). If it's that, I'm going to either go back to points or get a complete EI distributor.

Phil,
This will give you an idea of the Ohm readings you should get: Don't overlook the EI conversion you did. Several of the brands are known junk. I don't believe in them. Why did you put one in? |

Pete: NO,no! I'm an original guy like you. I meant the multimeter and a tube of electrical contact grease to apply as I reconnect stuff I test. I replaced the engine harness last year when I put in the EI conversion, so I'm thinking I'm going to recheck all the connections and apply some of that grease to everything while I'm at it. My email shouldn't be private; I'll fix that. What are those ohm specs. for the coil?
Thanks again |

Phil,
You sent me a PM but since you have your email in your profile set to "private", I can't respond. I need to ask, what are you going to get at Autozone? Hopefully not something for the boat! Even a cheap $20 meter will work. |

Yes, have a little "handy dandy" cheapy meter, but this sounds like I have to get an upgrade. It'll be worth the cost if I can use it to diagnose and fix this problem. Will go to Autozone tomorrow. Thanks.

Thanks. Will start w/coil for voltage, then plug spark etc. Always like to check in w/ the gurus before I start a project like this. Gives me confidence that you guys have all been here before. No lanyard w/this one-just ignition button and it lights up and seems to pass on the voltage.

Phillip - Get a volt meter & check that you have power to the coil. If so, pull a plug wire to see if you have spark. I would suspect the electronic distributor if you have power but no spark.

Have you verified you have spark? I would check there first.

1st outing this year w/ '86 351, started easily enough and ran sweetly for two runs. Shut it down for the night, and in the morning it would not start. Plenty of cranking power, but not even a hint of catching- even with carb cleaner squirted down the carb. I put in a Prestolite electronic ignition conversion 2 years ago with no problems (yet). Where would you go first to resolve?
Thanks. Will continue to search the archives. |
