I assumed he plugged the one end and pressurized it with water pressure.

Eric,
Good info to know - thanks.

Since Mike didn't really give us much on the year of his boat nor has it in the diaries (no avitar at least) I had to get it the hard way by doing a search through his old posts. It looks like he has an 84 SN so that tells me he most likely has the Velvet B/W.

At least he has the new cooler since I would not trust his testing method.

Mike,
The oil side of the cooler is easier to pressurize since it has the threaded fittings. You use regulated air at no more than about 30 PSI. Stick the cooler in a bucket of water and look for air bubbles. Make sure you double wrench (use 2 wrenches) on those fittings. The cooler is a thin piece of copper all soldered together and the fittings to the shell are easy to damage.

If you didn't get water out the fittings that tells me it isn't leaking. That would be the only place water could get in to the fluid.
Am I forgetting something and there’s somewhere else the water could get in??

Hey maybe you could market that mobile testing device and go around and help others!!

Seriously, it will take several fluid changes to get all the water out. Water will find all the little nook and crannies it can within the gear and hide. Also remember that it only takes a little water to make the fluid look milky. Flushing would make a better method of removing the water.

Did you get water out the fluid fittings during the test?

Mike,
How many times did you change the trans fluid? it may take several before you get all the water out.

Does the skate board make it a mobile testing device?
For thousands of years men have felt the irresistible urge to go to sea, and many of them died. Things got better after they invented boats.

Sounds like an interior cooler leak to me thats about the only way water can get in the tranny oil.
The 7" will work as long as you can fit it in and the cooler lines reach.
How did you pressure test the cooler?

Thanks,
I did the rear main yesterday so hopefully that oil is no longer there.
The tranny had the slight discoloration, It had a pretty good amount of water in it awhile back so I drained a few times and it seemed to clear up.Pressure checked the cooler and did not see any leaks, but now there was a little water in the fluid, after about 5 hours running time.

Dog,
I'm not following you here.
Are you dripping oil in the bildge (rear seal) or are you getting water in the tranny fluid(cooler leak). What discoloration are you talking about.
