Figured it out I believe, the magnets fell out of the magnetic sleeve underneath the rotor.

Put the points back in. Pertronix is very unreliable.

You getting spark when the ignition switch is in the run position but not in the crank position tells me somethings going on with the switch. Get the meter out and do some testing on the switch first.
If it tests good, then I'd look at the EI conversion. Some are a known problem. It's too bad the point set isn't in the distributor anymore!! |

Finished the tuneup this weekend on my 89' 2001. Changed the plugs out 2 weeks ago. Had the boat out on Friday and ran great, a cap and rotor have been on my list so I replaced that today and went down to the boat ramp. Boat has been starting effortlessly until today. Just cranks and cranks and cranks, pulled the plug out of number 1 and grounded it and checked and no spark while cranking but maybe 1 out of 5 times it will get spark when the key hits the off position. Pulled the coil wire off the cap and put a plug on it and it was faintly sparking. Put the old cap and rotor back on and same thing, no spark after it ran so well on Friday. The boat has the pertronix electronic ignition in it on a Napa coil,903 is the pn on. Anybody have an idea on a good place to start? The cap and rotor kit I picked up has the points and condenser in it and if it comes down to it I can eliminate or pinpoint the trouble spot as the ignition.
