The crack was located at the base of the weld where the pipe connects to the top of the tank. The welder thought that the weld was poor quality. I think the thing which amplified the issue was the previous owner was running the boat with an unbalanced prop - which fatigued the connection - very little free play between the pipe and the fill cap. I smelled gas after pulling the boat home. Spent some time trying to locate the problem and finally found it after topping off the tank. All four bolts were tight on mine.

Glad that this is behind me - hate the smell and thought of leaking gas in boat!

Where did you find the crack?
I found one in the filler neck weld of my '85. Found the cause to be that the PO never bolted the tank back down after doing something back there. The only thing keeping the tank from moving around with 30 gal of fuel in it was the filler hose/neck.
Moral to this story is make sure you bolt the tank back down.

I found a local guy who does boat gas tank repairs. He did a great job for $60. I went ahead and replaced all of the fuel lines while everything was apart.

Okay, there is a crack at the weld in the top of the tank. Do you recommend having it repaired or replace the tank? Thanks!

Can't imagine the tank is leaking at a weld seam and never heard anyone here have that problem but it's always possible. My guess is that the filler hose is bad. Not sure bout the wire reinforcement but it makes since that it does as you don't a weak hose when you're forcing 25 gallons of an explosive liquid thru it.

I'd go ahead and replace it as it is 27 yrs old and remove any doubt. It's only about 18" or so and couldn't be that expensive. In fact wile you are back there tinkering around the fuel tank I'd change out the fuel supply line and replace it with one that's made for ethenol blended fuels. The one installed now isn't.

You could fill up the tank to the point where its flowing out of the filler point and use an inspection mirror and flashlight to look for where the leak is coming from. Be sure you if you do this that it's outside and the floor is up so that when you do find the leak you can mop up the fuel in the bilge and you don't risk all the fumes collecting in the garage. Safety first! If it's the tank then you can see where the leak is coming from there too.


Can't help you on the seat removal as mine is nothing but a bench cushion and the back rest is snaps. Shouldn't be too hard to figure out and I'm sure someone will pipe in who knows. Let us know what you find out.

Maybe this is another issue, but I am dealing with a gas leak which appears to be either in the filler hose or on the top of the tank next to the filler hose as it only leaks when it is full and boat is rocked -85 Ski Nautique. I loosened all four clamps and removed the gas cap cover - the tip on prying it up was great. I re-tightened the hose but I still have the leak. It seems to have slowed down, but can't tell for sure - maybe wishful thinking. I have a couple of questions - I noticed the hose had wire reinforcement - like a water hose, is there a special hose required for this? Is this a common problem with leakage in this areas? Is there a link somewhere on how to remove the rear side seats?

Its Out ! I twisted the Filler Top with a stilson and kept rotating it and levering the Filler Up eventually it broke free

If you can wiggle a cotter pin puller ( basically an awl with a 90' bend in it) in between the line and the filler neck of either the tank or the fill fitting you might be able to work your way around the rubber hose busting the 23yr old "death grip seal" on it loose enough to pull the tank out.

And I have a question? you have LPG and gasoline and I guess you can just switch between them? I figured it was just one or the other but not both.

4 hose clamps is how most mfgrs do it, just to be sure, after all its gasoline in there.

Agree that cutting with a razor knife carefully perpendicular to the neck is best way to do it. It is the hardest part of the job. Don't get cut! replace with a new section of the correct fuel fill hose. replacing will be kind of a trick too-either pull the fuelfill off and then attach the hose to the tank(put all 4 clamps back on loose) and install tank then put back in fuelfill by pushing it down and in to hose-tighten all 4 clamps. Or try to tip the tank on angle and get hose under fuelfill and insert and get tank set. this may be harder and you may end up pulling the fuelfill out anyway after you waste time wrestling with it. but one way or the other will work.

Recently did this on mine and found the easiest way was to cut the filler fuel line perpendicular to the neck to release it. The rubber tends to get hard and baked onto to filler neck. Be careful not do damage the aluminum so you don't get leaks when you put the new line on for re-install. After cutting the line, tank should swivel out pretty easily. Make sure you siphon as much gas out as possible so tank is not too heavy.

I have removed LPG tank but am struggling with the Petrol The part I'm struggling with is the Hose from the Tank to the Filler I have undone the jubilee clip ( all 4 of them ! ??? ) and undone the screws on the outside at the Filler cap The hose from filler to tank is quite rigid should I be able to bend it and pull it off ? or is it a case of lifting the filler neck out from the Top ( seems to be stuck in hard as well ) cant really move the tank out until the filler pipe is removed
Any advice ?? Thanks

Tnaks for that Morfoot I have two Tanks ( just to be sure !) Petrol as original standard and LPG in front I have successfully loosened the LPG ready to move it to the side so its the standard petrol behind that is next . At the moment here in the UK it is raining dry for 10-30mins then raining its been like that all week and same for next 3-4days I'm waiting for a 3-4hr dry spell to get in there and pull the tank and get it lakeworthy when ....... the weather and the sun comes ?

Boyd,

Since it is an LPG tank mounted in a box, I would assume look for straps attaching it to whatever it is mounted to. It wouldn't be the standard mounting or piping as a gas tank from the factory. Show us some pictures and maybe we can help out.

Boyd, the gas tank should be held in place by two steel straps just inboard of the main stringers I believe. You should only have to remove the nuts of the threaded portion (that was welded to the straps). Pull the straps up and slide the tank forward once you get the fuel vent line, fuel supply line, and wires to the fuel gage removed. Should be fairly easy but no guarantees.

Hi I am about to do my rudder stuffing and have prepped the way fro access ( which means unsecuring a 100L LPG tank in a Box in place of the seat ). On inspection down there I noticed that at the rear of the tank the flexible tube for venting was torn due to age of boat i suspect i need to replace this so I am guessing that i need to remove the Tank to gain full access to this plus I can check any leaks from the Board platform lags and the Speedo Tubes . How do I remove the tank ????
Also I could flush the tank if its out
