One thing I've read, is if the engine has gotten very hot, and you find the problem and fix it, don't start it again. Let it cool down on it's own and start it later on.

I guess if you introduce the cold water all of a sudden, to an extremely hot engine, it can cause problems.

If you wanted to be really sure there is no damage, you could pressure test the water jacket to 15 PSI. This would involve some work to plug all water inlets & outlets, then hookup an air source. You either gage pressure decay, or look for air flow to detect a head gasket leak.

I managed to air lock my rwp (will go into that another time, and save my embarrassment for now) so the engine ran at low rpm for around 10 - 15 mins without cooling. The engine was HOT, however having changed oil and impeller, which remarkably did not show signs of damage, I have run the engine for around 6hours without problem , oil is clean etc. I am going to do a compression test to make sure there are no warped heads, can you think of any other tests, checks I should make? Thanks!
