Mine too, I assumed it was voltage ground issues. I also had a bad temp gauge, that I assumed was wiring too. After trying everything, I finally decided to "throw" a temp gauge at it, and that fixed my temp gauge issue. It was the gauge. Since my bouncing gas gauge is also a nearly 20 year old VDO component, I'm now suspicious of that too. |

My gauge has always bounced in my '93 Ski.
However earlier this year my dads pontoon boat had fuel gauge issues. He was told its always the sender. Well it wasn't, turned out to be the gauge. In my measuring attempts to track down the problem, I witnessed the OHMs reading from the sender changing very rapidly when the float was moved up and down. That being said, I believe any damping is being done by the gauge and not the sender. This was also observed when power was removed from the gauge, it didn't slam down to empty, but slowly moved that direction. My dads gauge is a Teleflex gauge too. In my Nautique, I just know I'm low when the needle stops bouncing on empty and hope I'm not too far from home :-) |

Steve,
Gauges have dampening to prevent rapid needle movement due to rapid changes in sender resistance. In this case, the gas level changing from turning the boat, etc. I would say your problem is not mechanical but electrical. Check all the connections on the gauge circuit. Don't forget to check the connectors in the wiring harness. Make sure you have a good ground to the tank and a good steady nominal 12 volts to the gauge itself. You need to get the meter out. |

So my gas guage started bouncing around this weekend. Close to a full tank, but it was bouncing by the empty. I am guessing that the long rod that goes in the tank and floats with the gas is bad. Not really sure, looking for some diagnostic tips. Thanks
