Thanks for the advise and help. I'll pull the dash and have a look. I was behind the dash on the left side earlier this summer due to a loose ignition set. At that time I didn't notice any corrosion.
Where is the sending unit for the tach on the '96 ? 351 w/carb. |

My '96 used to do the same thing. My suggestion is to pull the dash pod and clean all your connections behind the dash, I used a wire brush on all the contacts and nuts, then put them back on. Some dielectric grease will help them from corroding in the future. These older boats are known for having substandard wiring, and over time it catches up to them. Any bit of corrosion will start causing issues such as you are experiencing as the continuity starts getting less and the voltage to the gauges drops.

Today on my '96 SN the tach started to be weird. I've owned to boat since new and know it pretty well,610 hours total time. At idle, the tach reads, as it should, 800rpm or so. The motor idles fine, no hesitation all, pulls strong, but at 32 mph the tach shows 4000/4200 rpm, at full throttle 40/42 mph the tach shows 5000 + rpm.
Anyone have any ideas ? Thanks in advance, Woody |
